Chapter 10 - The Unseen Shadow

Sarah carried the black envelope into the warm, sunlit kitchen where Nathan was happily cooking lunch.

She opened the flap and pulled out a single piece of heavy, expensive parchment paper.

There was no return address, no name, and absolutely no explanation for the delivery.

Inside the envelope was a pristine, terrifyingly clear ultrasound photograph of a very real, growing baby.

Sarah dropped the photograph onto the kitchen counter, her hands shaking violently.

Nathan walked over, wiping his hands on a towel, and looked down at the medical image.

His face turned completely pale as he read the patient name printed in bold black letters at the top corner.

The name on the ultrasound was not Vanessa.

It was Sarah's own estranged, deeply troubled younger sister, who had supposedly vanished overseas five years ago.

A short, handwritten note was clipped to the back of the glossy photograph.

It simply read, "Did you really think David was the only one managing the family secrets?"

Before they could process the horrifying implication, their brand new home security system suddenly began to blare.

A heavy, rhythmic knocking echoed slowly and deliberately from the solid oak wood of their front door.
