Chapter 1 - The Illusion of Ordinary

Marcus Hayes was everything Clara thought she wanted. He was a junior financial analyst at a mid-tier firm, fiercely ambitious, and charmingly unaware of the world Clara truly came from. When they bumped into each other at that local bakery, he had apologized profusely, buying her a three-dollar coffee as a peace offering.
To Clara, who had spent her life dodging men who only saw dollar signs in her eyes, Marcus’s genuine smile was intoxicating.
They dated for two years. Clara maintained her facade flawlessly. She worked remotely as a "freelance consultant," rented a modest one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn, and drove a five-year-old Honda. Marcus, driven and hungry for success, paid for their dinners, proudly claiming he would one day give her the world.
"You don't need to give me the world, Marcus," Clara had whispered one night as they sat on the roof of her apartment building. "I just want you."

When he proposed with a modest, one-carat lab-grown diamond, Clara cried tears of genuine joy. She didn't care that the ring cost less than the shoes sitting in her father’s closet. She cared that Marcus had saved for six months to buy it. They married in a small courthouse ceremony, followed by a dinner with Marcus’s family. Arthur Vanguard did not attend, honoring his daughter’s wish to remain completely off the radar, though he sent a modest blender as a wedding gift.
For the first three years, it was paradise. But as Marcus began to climb the corporate ladder, the sweet, ambitious man Clara had fallen in love with started to change.
