Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Savior

A massive explosion threw all three of us onto the hard concrete floor.

Thick gray smoke filled the warehouse as five armed mercenaries stepped through the ruined doorway.

They were wearing dark tactical gear and carrying suppressed automatic rifles.

"Secure the drive and kill all of them," the lead mercenary ordered coldly.

I scrambled backward, trying to shield Hector and the unconscious professor.

I had no weapons, no plan, and absolutely no way to fight back.

One of the armed men raised his rifle and aimed it directly at my face.

Suddenly, a massive metal pipe swung violently out of the dark smoke.

The heavy pipe struck the mercenary precisely in the side of his helmet.

The man collapsed to the ground instantly without making a single sound.

The other mercenaries turned around in panic, firing wildly into the thick smoke.

A tall figure moved through the shadows with terrifying speed and precision.

The figure disarmed the second guard and used him as a human shield against the incoming bullets.

Within thirty seconds, all five highly trained killers were lying unconscious on the warehouse floor.

The smoke slowly began to clear, revealing our mysterious savior.

It was my mother, Elena, wearing a dark leather jacket and holding a stolen rifle.

I stared at her with my mouth hanging completely open in sheer shock.

"Mom?" I whispered, unable to believe what I was seeing.

Elena dropped the rifle and ran over to hug me tightly.

"I told you I was going to protect you," she said, checking my face for any injuries.

Hector stood up slowly, a proud smile breaking across his weathered face.

"Your mother was not always a simple seamstress in a quiet town, Julian," Hector revealed softly.

"She used to be the head of security for Sterling Corporation before she ran away with you," he explained.

My entire reality was being rewritten right in front of my eyes.

The gentle woman who baked me cookies was actually a highly trained corporate operative.

"We need to move before Richard sends a larger cleanup crew," Elena ordered strictly.

She searched the unconscious mercenaries and took their extra ammunition and car keys.

"I have the evidence to ruin Richard on this drive," I told her, holding up the silver flash drive.

Elena took the drive from my hand and plugged it into a portable tablet she brought.

She tapped the screen a few times, and her face instantly went completely pale.

"The files are heavily encrypted with a biometric lock," Elena stated grimly.

"The only way to open this data is to scan Richard Sterling's right thumbprint."
