Chapter 10 - The Foundation of Truth

"I always plan for every possible contingency," Richard mocked cruelly.
He held the phone closer so Hector could clearly see Elena’s terrified face.
"You press that detonator, and she dies instantly," Richard promised.
Hector’s hand began to shake violently as the impossible weight of the choice crushed him.
I looked at my stepfather, the man who had sacrificed his entire life for me.
I knew he would rather die a thousand times than let anything happen to my mother.
"Do it, Hector," I whispered, tears mixing with the rain on my face.
Before Hector could make a move, the wail of a hundred police sirens shattered the night air.
Dozens of FBI tactical vehicles swarmed the alleyway from both directions, completely trapping Richard’s men.
Professor Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a massive stack of printed documents.
"You missed one backup drive, Richard," Vance announced loudly over the police megaphone.
"I sent physical copies of Julian’s thesis to the FBI Director three hours ago," he declared.
The federal agents swarmed the alley, forcing Richard’s armed guards to drop their weapons immediately.
Richard tried to run toward his armored truck, but two agents tackled him hard onto the wet concrete.
"The men holding your mother have already been neutralized by our SWAT team," Vance told me with a reassuring smile.
The nightmare was finally, completely over.
Hector slowly lowered the detonator, and I rushed forward to pull him into a massive, crushing hug.
Six months later, the sun shone brightly on the university campus.
Richard Sterling was serving a life sentence in federal prison for mass murder and corruption.
His dangerous hospital project had been completely demolished and rebuilt safely using Hector's original, brilliant designs.
I stood on the grand auditorium stage wearing my black graduation gown and velvet hood.
Professor Vance proudly handed me my official PhD diploma while the crowd cheered loudly.
I looked out into the front row and saw Hector wearing a brand new, perfectly tailored suit.
He was holding my mother’s hand, smiling with tears of absolute joy streaming down his face.
He was no longer just a disgraced construction worker; he was recognized publicly as a hero and a genius.
I finally had the perfect, happy family I had always dreamed of.
After the ceremony, we went back to our old apartment to pack up my childhood bedroom for my big move.
I pulled my heavy wooden desk away from the wall and noticed a loose floorboard underneath it.
I pried the wood up and found a yellowed, sealed hospital envelope hidden in the dust.
I opened it and stared at the official birth certificate in absolute, horrifying shock.

The name of my biological mother listed on the document was not Elena.
It was Victoria Sterling, Richard’s sister, meaning the woman who raised me had kidnapped me twenty-five years ago.
