Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The dull thud of Marcus's body hitting the asphalt seemed to mute the entire world.
I froze with my hand still hovering over the door handle of my truck.
I slowly turned around to see the regional director casually lowering his smoking weapon.
The federal agents around the perimeter did not even flinch or lower their rifles.
They simply watched with cold and completely emotionless expressions.
I reached for my sidearm but an agent violently cracked the butt of his rifle against my skull.
I collapsed to my knees on the hard tarmac with blood pouring into my eyes.
Brutus snarled aggressively and prepared to launch himself at the men surrounding me.
The regional director smiled warmly and raised his hand in a calm gesture.
He looked directly at the little girl who had stopped walking toward the jet.
The innocent and terrified child I had risked my life to save slowly turned around.
The frightened expression melted off her face entirely to reveal a cold and calculating smirk.
She brushed the dirt off her pink jacket and walked casually toward the director.
She did not speak with the high-pitched voice of a scared six-year-old.
She spoke in flawless and authoritative Russian ordering the agents to stand down.
The regional director respectfully bowed his head to her and handed her a specialized encrypted tablet.
I stared in absolute horror as I realized she was not a kidnapped victim or a biological weapon.
She was the highest-ranking handler of a foreign intelligence sleeper cell embedded on American soil.
Elena was pulled from the passenger seat and thrown violently onto the ground next to me.
My wife looked up at the little girl and begged for her life claiming she had perfected the synthetic venom.
The little girl completely ignored her and looked down at my bleeding face.
She calmly explained that the park incident was just a live-fire field test to see if a military K9 could survive the new toxin.
She smiled sweetly and thanked me for providing the perfect test subject.
Then she pulled a small silver whistle from her pocket and blew a silent ultrasonic pitch.

Brutus's eyes instantly glazed over as he slowly turned his massive head to face me.
The dog I trusted with my life bared his teeth and let out a guttural sound of pure lethal intent.
