Chapter 9 - The Impossible Choice

Norah dropped gracefully to her knees, shining the faint light of her cell phone into the dark recesses of the open safe.

Her heart completely stopped.

Strapped securely to the heavy steel floor of the safe was a massive block of C4 plastic explosive, wired directly to a blinking digital timer.

The timer currently read exactly three minutes and forty-five seconds.

"The explosion won't just kill you, Norah," Marcus's voice crackled mockingly over the radio.

"It is specifically designed to blow the main structural support column of the penthouse."

"It will bring the entire roof crashing down, burying Gabriel and his loyal men under tons of concrete."

Norah grabbed the small radio tightly, her knuckles turning completely white.

"Why are you telling me this?" she demanded, tears of pure terror stinging her eyes.

"If you wanted us dead, you wouldn't give us a warning."

Marcus chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that chilled her to the bone.

"Because I want to offer you a very simple choice, Norah."

"You are a remarkably resourceful woman, and I deeply respect survivors."

"If you open the office door and calmly walk out to my men right now, I will remotely deactivate the bomb."

"You will come work for me as my personal chef, and I will ensure you live a long, incredibly luxurious life."

"But if you try to warn Gabriel, or if you attempt to disarm the bomb yourself, I will detonate it immediately."

Norah stared at the glowing red numbers on the timer, rapidly counting down toward absolute destruction.

Three minutes and twenty seconds.

She could hear the brutal, deafening gunfire echoing loudly from the living room outside the heavy steel door.

Gabriel was fiercely fighting for his life, completely unaware that a massive bomb was ticking away right behind him.

If she walked out and surrendered, she would survive, but she would be willingly handing Gabriel over to be slaughtered by the Syndicate.

If she stayed, they would all die together in the crumbling ruins of the penthouse.

Norah looked at the heavily loaded assault rifle resting inside the safe.

She wasn't a trained killer, but she had grown up surviving the brutal streets of the Narrows.

She absolutely refused to be a helpless pawn in a mafia war.

"I politely decline your offer, Marcus," Norah said coldly into the radio, and violently smashed the device with the butt of the rifle.

She slung the heavy weapon over her shoulder and aggressively studied the intricate wiring of the bomb.

She was a nursing student, trained to remain incredibly calm under immense pressure and precisely navigate complex biological systems.

Wiring wasn't anatomy, but logic was universal.

There were three wires leading from the digital timer to the primary detonator cap: red, blue, and yellow.

Two minutes remaining.

Norah grabbed a heavy, sharp letter opener from Gabriel's mahogany desk.

She carefully traced the blue wire back to the primary power source. It was a dummy wire, deliberately designed to trigger the explosive if cut.

She traced the red wire. It bypassed the timer entirely and connected directly to the radio receiver she had just smashed.

The yellow wire was the only one actively feeding the countdown sequence to the detonator.

One minute and ten seconds.

Her hands shook violently as she wedged the sharp blade of the letter opener under the yellow wire.

She squeezed her eyes tightly shut, praying to a God she hadn't spoken to in years, and sliced cleanly through the wire.

The blinking red timer instantly went dark.

The bomb was successfully disarmed.

Norah let out a massive, shuddering breath, collapsing weakly against the safe.

But her relief was incredibly short-lived.

The heavy steel door of the office suddenly exploded inward with a deafening crash.
