Chapter 10 - The False Sunrise

The heavy steel door slammed violently against the wall, tearing completely off its reinforced hinges.
Thick smoke poured aggressively into the office, obscuring everything in a blinding gray haze.
Norah scrambled backward, desperately raising the heavy assault rifle she had taken from the safe.
A towering figure stepped ominously through the smoke, heavily bruised and covered entirely in dark blood.
It was Gabriel.
He was panting heavily, leaning dangerously against the doorframe, his left arm hanging uselessly by his side.
"Gabriel!" Norah cried, dropping the weapon and rushing forward to support his massive weight.
"It's over," Gabriel gasped, his voice incredibly weak and raspy.
"Leo managed to secure the perimeter."
"Marcus's men have completely retreated."
He looked past her, his eyes widening in absolute shock as he saw the massive, disarmed C4 explosive resting in the open safe.
"You disarmed a bomb?" Gabriel asked, staring at her in sheer disbelief.
"I guess cooking isn't my only hidden talent," Norah replied, attempting a weak, exhausted smile.
Gabriel leaned heavily against her, a genuine look of profound awe and deep gratitude crossing his hardened features.
"You saved my life again, Norah."
"I owe you absolutely everything."
They slowly limped out of the ruined office into the devastated living room.
The luxurious penthouse was completely destroyed, the expensive furniture shredded by relentless gunfire and covered in shattered glass.
Leo was sitting heavily on an overturned sofa, wrapping a thick bandage around a nasty bullet wound in his leg.
The morning sun was just beginning to aggressively pierce through the storm clouds, casting a pale, golden light through the shattered windows.
"We survived," Leo grunted, offering a rare, bloody grin.
"Marcus severely underestimated us."
Gabriel nodded, looking out over the waking city with a renewed sense of fierce determination.
"Marcus played his hand and completely failed."
"Now, we are going to hunt him down and burn his entire Syndicate to the ground."
He turned to Norah, his dark eyes filled with absolute sincerity.
"I promise you, Norah, you are completely safe now."
"I will ensure you get your nursing degree, and you will never have to worry about money or danger ever again."
Norah looked at the powerful, ruthless mafia boss, finally allowing herself to believe the nightmare was truly over.
She had survived the absolute worst night of her life, and she had somehow earned the unwavering protection of the most dangerous man in the city.
"Thank you, Gabriel," Norah whispered softly, feeling a sudden, strange sense of genuine peace.
"I think I would really like to go home now."
Gabriel smiled warmly and gestured for Leo to call for a secure transport vehicle.
As Leo reached into his jacket for his encrypted radio, a sudden, deafening gunshot echoed sharply through the quiet penthouse.
Gabriel's eyes widened in absolute shock as a small, dark red blossom of blood rapidly exploded across his chest.
He collapsed heavily onto the ruined floor, gasping desperately for air.
Norah screamed in sheer terror, instantly dropping to her knees to press her hands against the fatal wound.
She looked up frantically, expecting to see another hidden Syndicate assassin standing in the shadows.
But there was no assassin.
Leo was standing perfectly still, his heavy, smoking pistol aimed directly at Gabriel.
"I am so sorry, Boss," Leo said coldly, completely devoid of any emotion.
"But Marcus promised me the entire North Side territory if I simply finished the job."
Norah stared at the giant enforcer in absolute, paralyzing horror.
The trusted, loyal right-hand man had been the ultimate traitor the entire time.
Leo slowly turned his weapon and aimed it directly at Norah’s head.

"It truly is a shame, Norah," Leo whispered chillingly.
"You really did make the best stracotto I have ever tasted."
