Chapter 4 - The False Accusation

The police cruisers came to a screeching halt, boxing in my disabled car.

Four officers jumped out with their hands resting cautiously on their holstered weapons.

"Step away from the child and keep your hands where we can see them!" the lead officer barked.

I slowly raised my empty hands, making sure not to make any sudden movements.

"Officers, my daughter is terrified, please don't yell," I pleaded calmly.

Marcus immediately put on an act, raising his hands and looking like a concerned citizen.

"Thank God you're here, officers," Marcus lied smoothly.

"This man just assaulted his fiancée at the altar and is trying to kidnap her stepdaughter."

I felt my blood boil, but I knew losing my temper would only play exactly into their hands.

"That is an absolute lie," I stated firmly, keeping my eyes on the lead officer.

"My name is Daniel, I have full sole custody of my daughter, and that man is trying to extort me."

The officer approached me cautiously, checking my identification and looking down at Sophie.

Sophie was crying silently, her little hands gripping my trousers with desperate strength.

"Sir, we received a frantic call from a woman named Amanda claiming you struck her and abducted the child," the officer said.

"She is inside the church," I replied, pointing back toward the building.

"If you go look at her, you won't find a single mark on her, but you will find one on my daughter's face."

I gently knelt down and turned Sophie's face toward the police officer.

The bright red handprint from Amanda's vicious slap was still clearly visible on my little girl's pale cheek.

The officer's demeanor instantly shifted from aggressive to deeply concerned.

"Who did this to you, sweetheart?" the officer asked Sophie gently.

Sophie sniffled and pointed a shaky finger toward the church doors.

"Amanda hit me because I found her secret phone," Sophie whispered.

The officers exchanged a dark look, realizing the situation was entirely different from the emergency call.

They told Marcus to back away and instructed me to wait by the cruiser while they investigated inside.

I held Sophie tight, grateful that her bravery had just saved us from a terrible misunderstanding.

After twenty agonizing minutes, the lead officer returned and handed my ID back.

"She changed her story the second we mentioned the mark on your daughter's face," the officer sighed.

"You are free to go, sir, but I strongly advise you to contact a family lawyer immediately."

I thanked the officers, ordered a rideshare on my phone, and hurried Sophie into the backseat when it arrived.

We needed to get to a safe hotel far away from the venue to plan my next move.

Just as the car pulled onto the highway, my personal cell phone buzzed with an urgent notification.
