Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

The call came just after sunrise.

My body still ached from childbirth when Ryan Brooks flashed across my phone screen.

I answered the phone and he immediately demanded my presence at his wedding.

He offered no greeting and asked absolutely nothing about my well-being.

He laughed cruelly into the receiver.

He told me I needed to see what a real woman looked like because Lauren was pregnant.

He let a heavy silence hang in the air before adding that she was nothing like me.

My fingers tightened around the cold plastic of my phone.

I wanted to scream until my lungs gave out.

Instead, I looked at my beautiful sleeping daughter and forced my voice to remain perfectly steady.

He asked if I was still on the line.

I simply said yes.

He mocked me by saying I always wanted a family and should enjoy watching him finally have one.

Those toxic words dragged me back to every single trauma I had barely survived.

I remembered the two devastating miscarriages and the endless fertility clinics.

I remembered the needles, the tests, and the lonely nights locked in the bathroom crying.

My doctor had gently told me my body just needed more time to heal.

Ryan had coldly told me I was broken.

His arrogant mother had constantly called me barren to my face.

Lauren, his former assistant turned mistress, had even sent me flowers after our divorce.

The card attached to those flowers read that some women were simply chosen.

They truly believed they had completely won the war.

What none of them knew was that I discovered I was pregnant mere days before our divorce became final.

I disappeared into the shadows to protect my unborn child.

I refused to let Ryan destroy my baby's peace the way he had maliciously destroyed mine.

I glanced down at the tiny hospital bracelet wrapped around her wrist.

It read Baby Girl Carter.

She had my maiden name instead of his.

I told Ryan I would attend his lavish wedding.

He chuckled and told me to try not to embarrass myself.

I replied that I never do.

He asked if I was still pretending to have any pride left.

I told him I did not need pride anymore.

His voice hardened as he demanded to know what I had instead.

My eyes shifted toward the thick leather folder resting on my bedside table.

I told him I had proof.

The line went completely silent.

He angrily asked what the hell that meant.

I told him to send me the address and immediately hung up the phone.

Inside that leather folder were hidden bank records, deleted emails, and signed affidavits.

They proved Lauren had actively helped funnel money from an account connected to my grandmother's inheritance.

Underneath those financial documents was the one piece of paper Ryan could never laugh away.

It was a court-certified DNA test confirming he was my daughter's biological father.

Minutes later, the wedding details arrived in my inbox.

I leaned over and gently kissed my baby's warm forehead.

I whispered that her father had just invited us to his wedding.

Then my eyes caught the name of the corporate sponsor listed at the bottom of the digital invitation.

My breath completely stopped in my throat.

It was Vanguard Holdings.

That was the exact same shell company connected to the money stolen from my family inheritance.

Suddenly, Lauren's dirty affair looked like a tiny piece of a much darker, calculated conspiracy.

I quickly opened my laptop and hacked into the public registry for Vanguard Holdings.

I scrolled through the newly updated list of executive shareholders.

My heart pounded furiously as I recognized the primary name hiding behind the corporate veil.

May you like

The main shareholder stealing my money was not Ryan or Lauren.

It was someone I had trusted with my entire life.
