Chapter 8 - The Chaos

The abandoned shipyard instantly erupted into an absolute frenzy of chaotic, deafening crossfire.
The federal agents unleashed a barrage of suppressive fire toward the black SUVs, forcing the cartel enforcers to dive for cover.
Skylar threw herself flat onto the wet, freezing concrete, covering her head as bullets sparked violently against the rusted shipping containers around her.
She could hear Suzanne screaming in sheer terror as the syndicate director dragged her backward toward his armored vehicle.
Derek was screaming as well, crawling desperately through the muddy puddles to avoid being caught in the deadly crossfire.
Skylar knew she had to stay completely out of sight, but she could not just let Suzanne be taken away as a permanent hostage.
Despite everything Suzanne had done to her in the past, she was still a human being who did not deserve to be executed by a cartel.
Skylar spotted the dropped pistol belonging to the stunned mercenary resting in a puddle just a few feet away from her.
She low-crawled through the freezing mud, ignoring the searing pain radiating from her burned cheek and her throbbing ankle.
Her fingers finally wrapped around the cold, heavy metal grip of the discarded firearm.
She had never fired a real weapon in her entire life, but the pure adrenaline coursing through her veins erased all of her fear.
She popped up from behind a metal crate and aimed the pistol directly at the rear tire of the director's getaway SUV.
Skylar pulled the trigger three times, the massive recoil nearly snapping her fragile, exhausted wrists.
Two of the bullets completely missed, but the third shot struck the heavy rubber tire, causing it to explode with a loud, violent pop.
The director cursed aggressively as his vehicle heavily tilted to one side, rendering it completely useless for a high-speed escape.
The distraction provided the federal tactical team exactly the opening they needed to aggressively advance their position.
Three agents flanked the damaged SUV, throwing a powerful flashbang grenade directly at the director’s feet.
The blinding explosion of white light and deafening sound temporarily incapacitated everyone in the immediate vicinity.
The agents swiftly tackled the syndicate director to the ground, securing him in heavy steel handcuffs while pulling Suzanne to safety.
Skylar dropped the empty pistol and let out a massive sigh of relief, believing the horrific nightmare was finally over.

But as she turned around to find Marcus, a cold, muscular arm wrapped violently around her throat from behind.
Derek pressed the sharp, jagged edge of a broken glass bottle deeply against the side of her neck.
