Chapter 6 - The Midnight Transfer

Elias grabbed Maria’s arm and pulled her forcefully out of the holding room.
“We have to stop that transfer,” Elias said urgently, his professional calm completely shattered.
“If Charles gets Daniel into a private facility, he will officially declare him brain dead by morning.”
They rushed down the sterile hallway toward the ICU, avoiding the main security patrols.
They reached the observation window of room 412 just in time to see the nightmare unfolding.
Three men wearing unmarked paramedic uniforms were disconnecting Daniel from the hospital monitors.
They were transferring his motionless body onto a specialized, portable gurney.
Dr. Park was standing near the door, arguing fiercely with Charles Voss.
“This transfer is medically reckless and highly dangerous!” Dr. Park shouted, waving a clipboard.
Charles Voss simply handed her a massive stack of legal injunctions.
“I have a signed court order from a superior judge, Doctor,” Charles sneered.
“The board has deemed this hospital incompetent to handle his specific medical needs.”
Elias cursed under his breath, realizing Charles had legally outmaneuvered them in a matter of hours.
“We can't stop them here,” Elias whispered, pulling Maria away from the window.
“They have the law on their side right now.”
“So we just let them take him away to die?” Maria asked, tears stinging her eyes again.
“No,” Elias said, his eyes hardening with sudden resolve.
“We track the ambulance and hit the estate server tonight. If we expose the embezzlement by morning, the feds will raid the facility before Charles can pull the plug.”
They sprinted out of the hospital through the loading dock doors and jumped into Elias’s sleek black sedan.
Elias handed Maria an encrypted tablet connected to a GPS tracking system.
“I slipped a microscopic tracker into Daniel’s watchband three months ago when he first suspected Charles,” Elias explained.
Maria watched the glowing red dot on the screen as the ambulance sped away from the hospital.
“They aren't going to the private clinic downtown,” Maria noted, watching the dot move onto the highway.
“Where are they taking him?” Elias asked, merging onto the slick, rain-soaked road behind them.
Maria zoomed in on the digital map, her stomach dropping in sheer panic.
“They are taking him to the abandoned Vanguard Industries warehouse in the industrial district,” Maria gasped.
Elias gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned completely white.
“That’s not a medical facility,” Elias said grimly.
“That’s a highly secure execution site.”
Elias slammed on the gas, the powerful engine roaring as they sped through the dark city streets.
They reached the industrial district just in time to see the unmarked ambulance disappear inside the massive warehouse.
The heavy steel bay doors slammed shut, echoing loudly in the deserted street.
Elias parked the sedan behind a rusty dumpster and pulled a heavy, suppressed pistol from his glove compartment.
Maria stared at the gun in absolute shock.
“I thought you were a lawyer,” she whispered.
Elias checked the magazine and racked the slide with practiced, lethal efficiency.
“Before Daniel paid for my law degree, I was his head of corporate security,” Elias replied coldly.
Elias opened his car door, preparing to storm the building alone.
“Wait here,” Elias commanded.
But before he could take a single step, the warehouse doors violently exploded outward.
A massive black SUV smashed through the steel barrier, tearing out into the street.
The side door of the SUV was completely ripped off, revealing the interior of the vehicle.

Maria gasped in pure horror.
Daniel Whitfield was sitting fully upright in the backseat of the speeding SUV, awake, and holding a shotgun.
