Chapter 9 - The Betrayal

I slammed the heavy wooden door shut just as the first bullet splintered the doorframe.
I grabbed Emily and threw her onto the floor behind the solid stone fireplace.
I picked up my tactical rifle and chambered a round.
Thorne had completely sold me out to the cartel.
I heard the crunch of heavy boots surrounding the perimeter of the cabin.
Thorne shouted through the broken wood of the front door.
He told me there was nowhere left to run and ordered me to surrender the flash drive.
I realized the cartel did not care about me or Emily at all.
They only wanted the accounting ledgers that proved their entire financial network.
I fired three quick shots through the front window to force them to keep their heads down.
I told Emily to crawl toward the trapdoor hidden under the kitchen rug.
It led to a small root cellar with a rusted drainage pipe that emptied into the nearby creek.
She opened the trapdoor and slid down into the damp darkness.
I laid down suppressing fire, shattering the remaining windows of the cabin.
Thorne's men returned fire with fully automatic weapons, tearing the interior of the cabin to shreds.
I dropped a smoke grenade on the floor and dove into the trapdoor.
I locked the heavy iron latch from the inside just as the front door was kicked completely open.
Emily and I crawled through the freezing water of the drainage pipe for what felt like hours.
We finally emerged into the icy creek a quarter of a mile downstream from the burning cabin.
We hid under the roots of a massive fallen tree and waited for the sun to rise.
I pulled Thorne's secure satellite phone from my pocket, which I had cloned earlier using my police tech.
I logged into his federal database using his stolen credentials.
I attached the encrypted ledgers from the flash drive to a mass email.
I sent the documents to every major national news outlet, the Department of Justice, and the FBI internal affairs division.
I hit send and watched the progress bar complete.
The cartel's entire network was officially exposed to the world.
There was no way Thorne, Miller, or the corrupt politicians could hide from this massive leak.

I looked at Emily and smiled, knowing we had finally destroyed the monsters.
We waited in the cold mud until we heard the distinct sound of honest state police sirens echoing through the mountains.
