Chapter 4 - The Hidden Ledger

I secretly slipped the flash drive into my coat pocket before the crime scene investigators arrived.

I knew Thomas would not trust the local police with whatever he had found.

I left Miller to handle the homicide scene and drove directly to the city hospital.

I bypassed the crowded waiting room and walked straight into the emergency ward.

A nurse recognized me and pointed toward a private room at the end of the hall.

I found Emily sitting up in a hospital bed with a white bandage over her bruised cheek.

She looked small and fragile in the harsh fluorescent lighting.

I sat in the chair beside her bed and gently took her hand.

I asked her why she hired her Uncle Thomas to investigate her husband.

Emily's eyes widened in sheer panic.

She asked me how I knew about Thomas.

I could not bring myself to tell her that Thomas was dead.

I simply told her that I found his notes.

Emily began to cry softly.

She said she discovered Michael was hiding millions of dollars in offshore accounts.

She said she confronted Michael about the money right before he started hitting her tonight.

She whispered that Michael was not a successful real estate developer.

She said his entire business was a front for money laundering.

I squeezed her hand and promised to keep her safe.

I stepped out into the hallway and pulled my secure police laptop from my bag.

I plugged the silver flash drive into the USB port and opened the encrypted files.

Thomas was a brilliant investigator.

He had bypassed Michael's firewalls and downloaded the primary accounting ledgers.

I scrolled through thousands of illicit transactions.

The money belonged to one of the most violent drug cartels on the western seaboard.

But the name authorizing the transfers was not Michael.

Every single transaction was digitally signed by Jessica.

Jessica was not just a wealthy mother-in-law.

She was the chief financial officer for a massive criminal syndicate.

I slammed the laptop shut and pulled out my weapon.

I realized Jessica had manipulated the entire domestic violence scene to cover her tracks.

I sprinted down the hallway to get Emily out of the hospital immediately.

I pushed open the door to her private room.

The hospital bed was completely empty.

The window was wide open, and the cold rain was blowing into the room.
