Chapter 9 - The Awakening

The single beep from the heart monitor echoes like a gunshot in the silent hallway.

Arthur shoves the terrified doctor aside and bursts through the doors of the ICU.

He runs directly to the side of the hospital bed and rips the white sheet off Helena's face.

Another slow, steady beep rings out from the medical machinery.

Helena takes a sudden, sharp gasp of air, her chest rising violently.

"She is alive!" Arthur shouts, tears of absolute joy flooding his eyes.

The boys rush into the room and grab their mother's pale, trembling hands.

Helena slowly blinks her eyes open, adjusting to the harsh fluorescent lights of the room.

She looks at Arthur and her two beautiful sons, a weak smile forming on her lips.

"You came back for me," Helena whispers, her voice raspy and dry.

"I will never leave you again, my love," Arthur promises, kissing her forehead gently.

Marcus drags the corrupt doctor into the room and forces him into a chair.

"Explain exactly what this chemical was supposed to do," Marcus orders the frightened physician.

The doctor swallows hard, looking at the furious faces surrounding him.

"Victoria wanted the world to believe Helena was legally dead," the doctor explains nervously.

"Once she was transported to the morgue, Victoria's men were going to smuggle her out of the country," he continues.

"She wanted to keep Helena as a permanent prisoner in a foreign black site just to torture Arthur," the doctor admits.

Arthur clenches his fists, disgusted by the pure evil of his former wife.

"Well, Victoria is rotting in a federal holding cell right now," Arthur says coldly.

The FBI agents enter the room, bringing the official medical staff to properly care for Helena.

They administer the correct fluids to flush the remaining paralyzing agent from her system.

Within a few hours, the color returns to Helena's cheeks, and she is able to sit up in bed.

The boys refuse to let go of her hands, making up for seventeen years of stolen affection.

"I loved you boys from the moment you were born," Helena tells them softly.

"I agreed to work as a maid just so I could watch you grow up," she explains through her tears.

Leo and Sam hug her tightly, finally feeling the warmth of a real mother's love.

The nightmare is over, and the entire corrupt conspiracy has been completely destroyed.

Marcus claps his brother on the shoulder with a wide, genuine smile.

"I think it is time we take our family home," Marcus suggests warmly.

Arthur nods in agreement, helping his true love out of the hospital bed.

They walk out of the hospital together, completely unified and stronger than ever before.

As they step into the bright morning sunlight, a sleek black limousine pulls up to the curb.

The tinted window rolls down, revealing a severe-looking lawyer holding a locked briefcase.

"Arthur Sterling, I represent the estate of Helena's late father," the lawyer announces formally.

"There is a final condition in his will that you must hear immediately," the lawyer says.
