Chapter 7 - Rising Tensions

We were completely surrounded by heavily armed mercenaries dressed in full combat gear and wearing terrifying black tactical masks.

They had their assault rifles raised, the laser sights painting small, deadly red dots across my chest and the signalman's forehead.

"Do not move a single muscle, or we will drop you right here," the lead mercenary growled, chambering a round into his rifle.

The freezing water was still rapidly draining from the cargo bay, swirling violently around our heavy, soaked boots.

The refugees behind us in the cages had survived the flood, but they were now entirely at the mercy of Kane's personal death squad.

I slowly raised my hands, keeping my eyes locked on the leader while secretly assessing the tactical layout of the narrow corridor.

There were five men in total, tightly clustered together, completely blocking the only exit leading toward the upper decks.

"Kane wants the agent brought to the bridge alive," the leader commanded, gesturing toward me with the barrel of his weapon.

"And what about the kid?" another mercenary asked, keeping his weapon trained directly on the trembling young sailor.

"Shoot the traitor and leave him for the fish," the leader replied coldly, without a single ounce of hesitation in his voice.

The mercenary adjusted his stance, aiming his rifle directly at the center of the kid's chest, preparing to pull the trigger.

I couldn't let another innocent person die on this ship just because they got caught up in my botched undercover mission.

I noticed a massive, exposed electrical junction box hanging loosely on the wall just inches away from the leader's head.

The rushing seawater from the flooded cargo bay was still dripping heavily from the ceiling right above the exposed electrical wires.

I lunged sideways, grabbing the wet collar of the signalman's uniform and violently dragging him down into the water with me.

At the exact same moment, I kicked my heavy wet boot straight into the exposed electrical panel on the steel wall.

A massive shower of blue sparks exploded outward, instantly shorting out the entire lighting grid for the lower half of the ship.

The corridor was plunged into absolute, pitch black darkness, followed immediately by the chaotic sound of blind, panicked gunfire.
