Chapter 4 - The Spider's Web

Audrey stared at the timestamp on the photograph until the numbers burned themselves into her memory.
Their entire romance had been a meticulously engineered trap from the very first day.
Julian hadn’t spilled coffee on her by accident, and he hadn't fallen in love with her laugh.
He had targeted her, stalked her, and manipulated her into a proposal, all under his mother’s careful direction.
Audrey closed the laptop, her hands shaking not from fear, but from a terrifying, cold rage.
She realized she was completely surrounded by enemies hiding behind the faces of the people she loved.
If they were willing to plan a con for over a year, they were capable of much worse.
When Julian returned home that evening, Audrey was waiting for him in the kitchen with a home-cooked dinner.
She wore a soft, comfortable sweater and smiled like a woman completely completely in love.
“How was work, honey?” she asked, pouring him a glass of expensive red wine.
Julian kissed her cheek and eagerly asked if she had spoken to the bank manager about the joint accounts.
Audrey sighed softly, acting frustrated by the slow pace of corporate bureaucracy.
“My trust officer needs both of us to sign some legal disclosures next week,” she lied flawlessly.
Julian masked his disappointment with a quick nod, taking a long sip of his wine.
“We can wait,” he said smoothly. “Your health and the baby are my only priorities right now.”
Audrey smiled and reached across the table to squeeze his hand.
“Actually, I was thinking about the baby today,” Audrey said gently. “And I realized something important.”
Julian leaned in, looking deeply attentive.
“I want our child to have a grandmother,” Audrey continued, forcing the words out of her mouth.
She suggested they invite Lenora over for a formal dinner to make amends and start fresh as a family.
Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes searching her face for any sign of a trap.
But Audrey’s performance was absolute perfection.
Julian finally smiled, praising Audrey for her maturity and beautiful, forgiving heart.
He pulled out his phone right there at the dinner table and called Lenora to invite her over for the following night.
Audrey watched him speak, secretly recording the entire phone call on a hidden device taped under the table.
The next evening, Lenora arrived at the mansion wearing an elegant, expensive dress that clearly wasn't a maid's uniform.
She brought an expensive bottle of sparkling cider for the "pregnant" bride.
The dinner began with tense, overly polite conversation about the weather and Julian's career.
Audrey played the gracious host, apologizing again for the misunderstanding at the wedding.
Lenora smiled thinly, accepting the apology while secretly sizing up the expensive artwork on the dining room walls.
As they ate dessert, Lenora casually complimented the new chandeliers in the main hallway.
She mentioned that they looked much brighter than the old brass ones that used to hang near the staircase.
Audrey froze, her fork hovering halfway to her mouth.
The old brass chandeliers had been removed and replaced three years ago.
May you like
Lenora hadn’t been inside the Bellamy mansion as a maid until the week of the wedding.
There was absolutely no way Lenora could have known about the old brass fixtures unless she had been secretly living inside the house years ago.
