Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The beam of a tactical flashlight pierced the darkness, blinding me as Ryan walked slowly down the stone steps.

He was holding a heavy, silenced pistol in his right hand, looking incredibly bored by the entire situation.

I instinctively moved in front of Eli, shielding my injured son with my own body.

"How did you find us without the tracker?" I demanded, squinting against the harsh glare of the light.

Ryan chuckled softly, a sound that made my skin crawl with absolute revulsion.

"Did you really think a cheap burner phone couldn't be triangulated by my father's tech team?" Ryan sneered.

He stopped at the bottom of the stairs, kicking a broken wooden pew out of his way with careless aggression.

"You have caused me an incredible amount of inconvenience tonight, Hannah," Ryan sighed heavily.

"I was supposed to be drinking champagne at the afterparty, and instead, I am hunting you through a filthy crypt."

I glared at him, refusing to let him see a single ounce of fear in my eyes.

"You are going to prison for the rest of your miserable life, Ryan," I told him fiercely.

Ryan laughed, pointing his pistol directly at my chest with chilling casualness.

"Nobody goes to prison when you own the entire justice system, little sister," he mocked.

"I am going to take your son, raise him to be just as ruthless as I am, and completely erase your pathetic memory from his mind."

His arrogant monologue gave me exactly what I needed: time.

While Ryan was busy bragging about his invincibility, I slowly reached behind my back and felt along the stone wall.

Sarah had told me earlier that this crypt was equipped with a hidden, hardwired panic alarm system.

My fingers brushed against a small, metal switch disguised perfectly within the mortar of the ancient bricks.

I maintained eye contact with Ryan, offering him a look of complete, broken defeat to feed his massive ego.

"You win, Ryan," I whispered, dramatically lowering my head in fake surrender.

His arrogant smile widened into a full grin of absolute triumph.

In that exact moment, I flicked the hidden switch upward with all my strength.

A silent, high-frequency alarm instantly transmitted a distress signal directly to the state police headquarters, completely bypassing the corrupt local cops.

I knew the state troopers operated outside of Ryan's criminal jurisdiction and would respond with overwhelming force.

Ryan frowned, sensing a shift in the atmosphere, and raised his gun to end the standoff.

"Say goodbye to your mother, Eli," Ryan commanded coldly.

Before he could pull the trigger, the massive wooden doors of the church above us were blown completely off their hinges.

Dozens of state troopers swarmed into the building, their heavy boots thundering across the wooden floorboards.

"State Police! Drop the weapon immediately!" a booming voice echoed down into the crypt.

Ryan cursed loudly, finally realizing that his untouchable empire had just been breached.

He slowly lowered his gun, preparing to negotiate his way out of the arrest.

Then, out of the shadows behind the state troopers, a figure stepped forward and pointed a weapon directly at my head.

It was my mother.
