Chapter 1 - The Guardianship Trap

The silence in the hallway felt heavy enough to crush my lungs.
My father stared at the floor while my mother glared at him with pure hatred.
The police officer placed his hand on his utility belt and turned toward my brother.
Ryan did not run or beg for mercy.
He simply reached into the inner pocket of his expensive jacket.
The officer drew his weapon instantly and ordered Ryan to freeze.
Ryan laughed softly and pulled out a folded piece of white paper.
"Relax, officer," Ryan said with a mocking smile.
"I am just retrieving a legal document that explains everything."
He handed the paper to the officer without a single ounce of fear in his eyes.
The paramedic holding the oxygen mask over my son's face looked at me in sheer disbelief.
I grabbed Eli's cold hand and held it tightly against my chest.
The officer unfolded the paper and scanned the printed words under the flashing red and blue lights from the porch.
His stern expression slowly shifted into a mask of deep confusion.
"Ma'am, is this your signature at the bottom of this page?" the officer asked me.
He held the document down so I could see it clearly.
It was an emergency medical and physical guardianship order granting Ryan full custody of my son.
My signature was scrawled perfectly across the bottom line in blue ink.
"I have never seen that paper in my entire life," I said, my voice trembling with rage.
My mother stepped forward and crossed her arms over her chest.
"She signed it two weeks ago when she was having one of her mental breakdowns," my mother lied flawlessly.
"Hannah is completely unstable, and Ryan has been stepping in to raise the boy properly."
I looked at my mother, feeling a level of betrayal so deep it completely shattered my heart.
"You forged my signature to give my abuser control of my child," I whispered.
Ryan smirked and looked directly at the police officer.
"As his legal guardian, I am refusing medical transport, so you can all leave my house now," Ryan commanded.
The paramedic named Mark stood up abruptly and blocked Ryan's path.
"This child has a depressed heart rate and signs of internal bleeding," Mark stated firmly.
"Guardianship or not, I am overriding your refusal under the emergency child welfare act."
Mark scooped Eli into his strong arms and rushed out the front door toward the waiting ambulance.
I scrambled to my feet and ran after them, ignoring the cheap heels digging into my bruised feet.
The officer grabbed Ryan by the shoulder to prevent him from following us.
"We will be investigating this document, sir, so do not leave town," the officer warned.
I climbed into the back of the ambulance, holding my breath as the doors slammed shut.
Mark connected Eli to a heart monitor and began inserting an intravenous line into his tiny arm.
"Your brother is a monster, but that is not the worst part of tonight," Mark said quietly over the wailing sirens.
I wiped the tears from my face and asked him what he meant.

Mark looked at me with an expression of pure terror.
"The police officer who just took that document from Ryan is the exact same man who helped Ryan beat up a witness three years ago."
