Chapter 4 - The Anonymous Tip

The words felt like a physical blow to my chest, knocking the air completely out of my lungs.

“What abuse allegations?” I gasped, staring wildly at the two police officers standing in my yard.

Sarah explained that an anonymous source had submitted photographs of Hannah with suspicious bruises.

The source claimed I was severely neglecting the child and punishing her with physical violence.

“Hannah fell off her bike last week, you saw the scrape yourself during our home visit!” I cried into the phone.

“I know, Claire, but the photos were completely altered to look like defensive wounds,” Sarah explained sadly.

Someone had intentionally manipulated the images and sent them directly to the family court judge.

I looked across the lawn and saw Diane watching me with a sickeningly triumphant smile on her face.

She had taken pictures of Hannah earlier today during the reunion, claiming she was making a family scrapbook.

Diane had framed me to ensure the judge would strip my license and force Hannah out of the family.

“I have to take her into state custody tonight, Claire, there is absolutely no other option,” Sarah warned.

I hung up the phone and looked down at Hannah, whose face was completely pale with sheer terror.

The police officers stepped forward again, holding out their hands to take the crying little girl.

“I am so sorry, sweetheart, but you have to go with them for just a little while,” I whispered through my tears.

I promised Hannah that I would fight with every ounce of my strength to bring her back home.

The officers gently pulled her away from me and led her toward the waiting police cruiser on the street.

Noah broke free from Diane’s grip and sprinted after the officers, yelling Hannah’s name loudly.

Diane chased him down and slapped him hard across the face, shocking the entire family into complete silence.

“You will never speak to that trashy little orphan again, do you hear me?” Diane screamed at her son.

Grandma marched down the driveway and grabbed Diane roughly by the shoulder.

“Get off my property right now, and do not ever come back,” Grandma ordered with terrifying authority.

Diane scoffed, dragged a crying Noah into her expensive car, and sped recklessly down the quiet suburban street.

I stood in the ruined backyard, watching the police cruiser drive away with my entire heart breaking into pieces.

I had exactly twelve hours before the emergency court hearing to prove Diane had completely fabricated the abuse.

I rushed into Grandma’s house and grabbed my laptop, determined to find the digital proof I desperately needed.

As I opened my email, a message from an unknown sender popped onto the screen with an attached video file.

The subject line simply read, “I recorded everything she did in the kitchen.”
