Chapter 1 - The Choice

Hannah looked at Noah with wide, serious eyes, holding her cracked paper plate like a shield.

“If you stay here with me, will she make you leave forever?” Hannah asked quietly.

The question hung heavy in the warm afternoon air, freezing the entire backyard in shock.

Noah, who had just turned eleven, stared back at the girl who had been pushed aside by his own mother.

He didn't look at Diane, who was fuming on the grass with her arms crossed tightly over her chest.

He didn't look at me, even though I was ready to intervene if things escalated any further.

He simply looked at the untouched blue birthday cake sitting between them on the concrete step.

“She can’t make me leave my own family,” Noah declared loudly enough for everyone to hear.

Diane’s face turned an ugly shade of red, a mix of furious embarrassment and pure, unadulterated rage.

“You are coming with me right now, Noah, or you will not be coming home at all!” she shouted.

Gasps erupted from the picnic tables as relatives exchanged horrified, disbelieving glances.

Grandma took a step forward, her expression harder than I had ever seen it in my entire life.

“Diane, you are not taking that boy anywhere while you are acting like a complete lunatic,” Grandma said firmly.

Diane scoffed and marched aggressively toward the porch, determined to physically grab her son by the arm.

I quickly moved to block her path, placing myself squarely between her and the children sitting on the steps.

“Do not take another step, Diane,” I warned, keeping my voice dangerously low and steady.

She glared at me, her eyes filled with years of bitter resentment that had finally boiled completely over.

“You think you can play savior with some broken foster kid and ruin my son’s birthday?” she hissed.

Before I could answer, a loud, sharp snap echoed from the driveway at the side of the house.

Everyone turned to see a dark, expensive sedan parked carelessly across the grass near Grandma’s flower beds.

A man stepped out of the vehicle wearing a tailored gray suit that looked entirely out of place at a family barbecue.

He held a thick leather briefcase and adjusted his silver sunglasses as he surveyed the tense scene.

He looked directly at Hannah, completely ignoring the massive family argument happening on the lawn.

“I am looking for Hannah Vance,” the man announced in a cold, professional voice.

My blood ran absolutely cold.

The man pulled a legal document from his briefcase and held it up toward the crowd.

“I am here on behalf of her biological father, and he is petitioning for immediate full custody.”
