Chapter 3 - The Home Invasion

I drove back to my house in the quiet, upscale suburbs of Annapolis. As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed a moving truck idling on the curb.

My front door was wide open.

I stepped out of my car, my pulse steadying into a slow, rhythmic beat. I walked up the steps and into my own living room. Beatrice was directing two large men carrying a floral sofa. Jessica was sitting in my favorite armchair, eating an apple.

“Put the sofa in the den,” Beatrice barked. Then she saw me. She crossed her arms, a triumphant smirk on her face. “You’re home early. Good. You can pack your bags. Jessica is moving in. This was Lucas's house.”

“This house,” I said calmly, pulling a folded document from my purse, “was purchased entirely with my VA loan, and the deed is solely in my name. Lucas was merely an occupant.”

Jessica choked on her apple. “But... Lucas said he paid the mortgage!”

“Lucas lied,” I replied. “About many things.” I pulled out my cell phone and dialed 911. “Yes, this is Commander Eleanor Thorne. I have a home invasion in progress. Two unauthorized individuals and a moving crew have breached my residence. Please send units immediately.”

Beatrice lunged forward. “You can't do this! This is my grandson's home! I will sue you for everything you have!”

“You have exactly four minutes before the Annapolis Police arrive,” I said, checking my watch. “I highly suggest you tell your movers to put my antique table down.”

When the police cruisers arrived, lights flashing, the neighborhood came out to watch. Beatrice and a hysterical Jessica were escorted off my lawn by armed officers. The movers hastily threw Jessica’s furniture onto the sidewalk, wanting no part in a felony trespassing charge.
