Chapter 2 - The Safe and the Secrets

The following morning, I walked into the Naval Air Station legal building. I wasn't there in my capacity as a prosecutor; I was there to claim my deceased husband's classified effects.
The base commander met me in the secure vault. He handed me a heavy, fireproof lockbox. “Eleanor, I am so sorry about the spectacle yesterday. Lucas was a good pilot, but... a complicated man.”
“Let’s see how complicated, sir,” I replied.
I took the lockbox back to my private office, locked the door, and entered the code Lucas had used for everything—his mother’s birthday. Inside were three items: a thick manila envelope, a secondary burner phone, and a ledger.
As a lawyer, I track paper. Paper never lies.
I opened the ledger first. Lucas hadn't just been cheating on me; he had been drowning. The ledger detailed massive, crippling debts. Offshore gambling accounts, high-interest shadow loans, and a staggering amount of money funneled into a private LLC named Bea’s Boutique—his mother’s failing antique business.
Then, I opened the manila envelope. Inside were the lease agreements for Jessica’s luxury apartment and the invoices for her expensive prenatal care. But attached to them were the loan applications. Lucas hadn't paid for them with his Navy salary. He had forged Jessica’s signature to take out predatory loans in her name, using her nonexistent credit to fund the lifestyle he promised her.

Lucas knew he was going bankrupt. The "updated will" leaving everything to me wasn't an act of love. It was a cowardly act of legal protection. By leaving his estate to me, he knew my status as a JAG officer and my pristine credit would absorb the blow, whereas Beatrice and Jessica would be utterly destroyed by the debt collectors.
He had left me the mess to clean up. But he forgot one thing: I don't clean up messes. I weaponize them.
