Chapter 8 - The Silent Witness

“Bailiff, remove that child from the courtroom immediately!” Arthur’s lawyer demanded.
“Your Honor, she is clearly traumatized and being coached by her grandfather.”
Judge Harrison raised his hand, silencing the lawyer.
He looked down at twelve-year-old Lucy, his strict demeanor softening slightly.
“Young lady, this is a courtroom, not a theater,” the judge warned.
“But if you have relevant evidence, I will allow you to approach the bench.”
Lucy slipped past the social worker and walked bravely to the front of the room.
She reached into her small pocket and pulled out a delicate silver locket.
I recognized it immediately; it was the necklace Rose never took off.
“My mom didn't trust physical hiding spots after Dad started tearing the house apart,” Lucy told the judge clearly.
“She hid the flash drive under the floorboards as a decoy.”
Arthur stood up from his chair, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple.
“This is absurd!” Arthur shouted. “She’s making this up to protect that crazy old man!”
“Sit down, Mr. Vance, or I will hold you in contempt,” the judge snapped.
Lucy popped open the silver locket.
Inside wasn't a picture, but a tiny, folded micro-SD memory card.
“Mom taped this inside her necklace and gave it to me at the hospital,” Lucy explained.
“She told me to only give it to a judge if Dad tried to take us.”
My lawyer, Sarah, immediately requested a recess to review the digital evidence.
Arthur’s legal team objected violently, claiming the evidence was tampered with and inadmissible.
The judge ignored them and ordered his clerk to fetch a court-issued laptop.
The courtroom descended into a tense, suffocating silence as the clerk inserted the memory card.
I watched Arthur pacing nervously by his table, furiously whispering to Evelyn.
Evelyn looked terrified, her conservative facade completely crumbling as she backed toward the courtroom doors.
The clerk connected the laptop to the large monitor mounted on the courtroom wall.
A video file appeared on the screen, dated three days before Rose collapsed.
The video was taken from a hidden nanny-cam placed high on the kitchen cabinets in Arthur's home.
The footage showed Arthur standing at the kitchen island, making two cups of morning tea.
He looked over his shoulder, ensuring he was alone.
Then, he pulled a small glass vial from his pocket and emptied the clear liquid into Rose’s favorite mug.
The entire courtroom gasped in unison.

Arthur spun around, his eyes locking onto the exit doors, realizing his perfect lie was dead.
Before anyone could react, Arthur lunged across the aisle and grabbed his youngest daughter, April, by the throat.
