Chapter 10 - The Vow Kept

The bullet shattered the wooden frame of the gallery benches, missing Lucy by mere inches.
Before Arthur could adjust his aim, two court bailiffs tackled him to the floor.
They wrenched the gun from his hand and pinned him face-down against the carpet.
I rushed forward and grabbed Lucy and April, pulling them into a fierce, desperate embrace as Rachel ran to join us.
Arthur cursed and thrashed as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
Judge Harrison stood behind his bench, his face pale but his voice booming with authority.
“Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, and the murder of your wife,” the judge declared.
The police dragged him out of the courtroom, his expensive suit ruined and his reputation destroyed forever.
The aftermath moved with surprising speed.
The video evidence was undeniable, and a search of Arthur's offshore accounts proved his financial crimes.
Evelyn was arrested two hours later at the airport, trying to board a flight to the Cayman Islands.
She took a plea deal immediately, testifying against Arthur to avoid a life sentence.
Arthur was sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
Judge Harrison officially granted me full, permanent legal custody of Lucy, Rachel, and April.
The court also froze Arthur's assets, ensuring Rose's trust fund and the stolen money were returned entirely to the girls.
Six months later, the horror of that week had finally begun to fade into the background.
The girls were thriving in their new schools, surrounded by the peace and love they had always deserved.
We were sitting on the back porch one sunny afternoon, watching April chase fireflies in the garden.
I smiled, holding a cup of coffee, finally feeling that I had kept my promise to my daughter.
Then, the mail carrier walked up the driveway and handed me a thick, registered letter with no return address.
I opened the seal and pulled out a single sheet of expensive, watermarked paper.
“Arthur was just a pawn, Charles, and you took him off the board for me,” the typed message read.

“Enjoy the girls while you can, because Rose owed me a lot more than three million dollars.”
I looked up at the tree line surrounding my property, realizing with a cold dread that we were being watched.
