Chapter 9 - The Broken Proof

Four armed police officers rushed into the examination room with their guns drawn.

"Put your hands in the air, Charles!" the lead officer ordered.

Arthur walked into the room right behind them, wearing a perfectly fake expression of horror.

"Thank God you found my daughters," Arthur cried out, pretending to wipe a tear.

"This crazy old man kidnapped them from the funeral and shot himself to make it look like I attacked him."

I tried to reach into my pocket to pull out my cell phone.

"I have proof," I shouted at the officers.

"I called 911, and the dispatcher heard his entire confession!"

I pulled my phone out, but my heart sank into my stomach.

The screen was completely shattered from my fall out the window.

The device was dead, nothing but a piece of crushed black glass and twisted metal.

Arthur smirked triumphantly, knowing my only piece of concrete evidence was destroyed.

"Officers, please arrest him before he hurts my children anymore," Arthur pleaded.

Two officers grabbed my arms forcefully and slammed me against the wall to handcuff me.

Lucy screamed and tried to run toward me, but a female officer held her back gently.

"It's over, Charles," Arthur whispered in my ear as he walked past me.

"I win."

I looked desperately at Dr. Evans, who was quietly securing a bandage over April's arm.

Dr. Evans suddenly stood up and cleared his throat loudly.

"Excuse me, officers," the doctor said, his voice calm and authoritative.

He held up a stack of printed medical documents.

"As a licensed medical professional, I am legally obligated to report a homicide attempt."

Arthur’s smug smile instantly vanished.

"I have just run a full toxicology screen on this child," Dr. Evans continued.

"Her blood is filled with a lethal synthetic neurotoxin."

"And I matched the chemical signature to this vial, which has the fingerprints of Elena Vance all over it."

The lead officer stopped tightening my handcuffs and turned around slowly.

Arthur took a step backward, suddenly looking very pale.

May you like

"He's lying!" Arthur shouted, panic creeping into his voice.

Just then, a pair of FBI agents walked through the shattered front door, holding a printed transcript of a 911 call.
