Chapter 7 - The Warehouse Trap

Thick clouds of concrete dust filled the air instantly, blinding us completely as the deafening echo of the explosion faded.

The entire second floor shook violently, raining small pieces of debris down upon our heads in the suffocating darkness.

I grabbed Tanya tightly, shielding her tiny body with my own as I desperately tried to clear the dust from my stinging eyes.

Through the settling smoke, I saw that the explosion had completely destroyed the staircase Marcus had been standing near.

The blast was not an attack on us, but a calculated destruction of the primary support beams leading to our level.

Raymond coughed heavily, waving the dust away as he quickly assessed the chaotic situation.

He realized that the criminal syndicate had planted explosive charges throughout the site to bury the evidence forever.

They intended to collapse the unfinished building on top of us, making our deaths look like a tragic construction accident.

We had only minutes to escape before the rest of the rigged charges detonated and brought the skyscraper down.

Raymond pointed toward a precarious wooden plank connecting our floor to an adjacent, structurally sound parking garage.

It was a terrifyingly narrow walkway suspended high above the unforgiving concrete ground, but it was our only chance.

I hesitated for a fraction of a second, my stomach twisting into tight knots at the dizzying height.

Another small explosion echoed from the floor below us, violently vibrating the concrete beneath my feet and deciding for me.

Raymond crossed the wooden plank first, proving it could hold our weight as he safely reached the secure parking structure.

He turned around and held his arms out securely, encouraging me to cross with my granddaughter.

I held Tanya tightly against my chest, whispering soothing promises as I stepped cautiously onto the bouncing wooden board.

I refused to look down at the deadly drop below, keeping my eyes locked entirely on the undercover agent waiting for us.

Just as I reached the halfway point, a heavy chunk of concrete fell from above and smashed onto the edge of our plank.

The wooden board splintered dangerously, dropping several inches and causing me to lose my balance completely.

I screamed loudly as we began to fall, reaching out desperately toward the concrete ledge with my free hand.

Raymond lunged forward heroically, grabbing my wrist with incredible strength just as the broken plank plummeted into the darkness below.

He grunted in pain, using every ounce of his remaining strength to pull us safely over the concrete ledge.

We collapsed onto the solid floor of the parking garage, gasping for air as the building behind us began to groan under its own collapsing weight.

I thanked the brave agent profusely, tears of sheer relief streaming rapidly down my dirty face.

Raymond simply nodded, helping us up and rushing us toward a stolen vehicle he had parked near the exit ramp.

We climbed into the safety of the car, finally believing that we had outsmarted the ruthless killers tracking us.

As Raymond started the engine, a dark figure suddenly sat up from the back seat and pressed a cold gun directly against my neck.
