Chapter 5 - The Betrayal

The air in the moving van suddenly turned freezing cold as my granddaughter's innocent words hung heavily in the confined space.

I stared blankly at Marcus Thorne, my mind desperately trying to process the horrifying implication of what Tanya had just revealed.

The private investigator's reassuring expression completely vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating stare that chilled me to the bone.

He slowly moved his hand away from the steering wheel, resting it casually on the heavy pistol holstered at his waist.

I realized with absolute certainty that this man was never trying to save us from the criminal syndicate.

Katherine had unknowingly hired the very man who worked as a professional cleaner for the corrupt organization stealing her money.

He had orchestrated the entire chase just to corner us and recover the damning evidence his employers desperately needed.

I instinctively pulled Tanya behind my back, subtly sliding my right hand toward the heavy leather purse containing the ledger.

Marcus let out a cruel, mocking laugh, confirming that he had indeed been at the house the night my daughter was murdered.

He proudly admitted that Bradley was too much of a coward to finish the job himself, so the syndicate sent a professional.

I felt a surge of uncontrollable, blinding rage replace the paralyzing fear that had consumed me all day.

As the armored van slowed down to navigate a sharp turn, I grabbed the heavy black ledger from my purse.

I swung the thick book with every ounce of strength I possessed, smashing the hard spine directly into the side of Marcus's face.

The brutal impact stunned him instantly, causing blood to spurt from his broken nose and blinding his vision.

He cried out in pain, his hands flying away from the steering wheel as the heavy van veered wildly off the road.

The vehicle crashed violently through a chain-link fence, bouncing roughly over the uneven terrain of an abandoned construction site.

I grabbed Tanya securely in my arms, preparing for the inevitable impact as the van slammed head-on into a massive pile of dirt.

The airbags deployed with a deafening pop, filling the front cabin with thick white smoke and the smell of burning powder.

I did not wait for Marcus to regain his senses, kicking the sliding side door open and tumbling out into the cold night air.

We ran desperately toward the skeletal frame of a half-built skyscraper towering over the abandoned site.

I knew we could not outrun a trained killer in the open, so we needed to find a place to hide in the shadows.

We climbed the concrete stairs to the second floor, crouching behind a massive stack of cement blocks near the edge of the building.

Below us, I could hear Marcus screaming furiously as he kicked his way out of the smoking van.

He turned on a high-powered flashlight, the bright beam sweeping menacingly across the concrete pillars as he began to hunt us.

I covered Tanya's mouth with my trembling hand, praying to any listening higher power that he would not hear her crying.

Suddenly, a familiar voice echoed loudly through the construction site, making my heart sink completely into my stomach.

Heather walked out from the shadows below, holding a silenced weapon and mocking Marcus for failing such a simple task.
