Chapter 5 - The Stolen Identity

I stepped away from the window, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

"He is parked right outside," I told David and Sarah, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

David immediately moved toward the door, his protective instincts taking over.

"I am going down there to drag him out of that car," David growled.

"No," Sarah commanded sharply, stepping in front of him.

"If you assault him, you will be arrested, and they will use that against you in the custody hearing."

She was right; this was exactly the kind of unhinged reaction my parents were hoping to provoke.

"We fight them with paper, not fists," Sarah said, grabbing a thick stack of fraud affidavit forms.

We spent the next three hours freezing every single line of credit, bank account, and asset tied to my social security number.

I filed a formal identity theft report with the federal authorities, attaching the IP addresses used for the offshore wire transfers.

"The bank is threatening immediate foreclosure because the first payment on the fraudulent loan bounced yesterday," Sarah explained.

My parents had intentionally triggered the default to accelerate the destruction of my home.

I drove home with David, feeling like a stranger in my own life.

When we walked through the front door, Lena was sitting on the living room rug, building a small tower out of wooden blocks.

She looked up at me, her big brown eyes filled with an unspoken, lingering fear.

"Is the lady with the clipboard coming back today?" Lena asked quietly.

I dropped to my knees and pulled her into a fierce, desperate hug.

"Nobody is ever going to take you away from me, Lena, I promise," I swore into her hair.

I knew I couldn't just play defense anymore.

If my parents were willing to destroy my family to save their reputation and hide their crimes, I had to burn their world to the ground first.

I went to my office and printed out every single page of the support ledger.

I printed the fraud affidavits, the offshore wire tracking documents, and the proof of my father's illegal gambling debts.

I packed it all into a heavy leather binder.

"Where are you going?" David asked as I grabbed my car keys.

"My parents are hosting their weekly charity luncheon at the country club right now," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

"I am going to deliver their consequences in front of everyone they care about."

David nodded, staying behind to guard the house and keep Lena safe.

I drove to the club, walked past the bewildered hostess, and pushed open the heavy oak doors of the grand dining room.

My mother was standing at the podium, smiling beautifully as she delivered a speech about family values.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me marching down the center aisle.
