Chapter 6 - The Burned Bridges

I refused to leave Chloe behind in the flames.
I grabbed a thick winter coat from the coat rack and wrapped it around my arms.
I pushed the burning beam off her leg with every ounce of strength I possessed.
We stumbled out the broken window and climbed down the external fire escape just as the office exploded.
Sirens wailed in the distance as we collapsed into the dark alley below.
"The evidence is completely gone," Chloe sobbed, clutching her injured leg.
"Not all of it," I said, catching my breath in the freezing air.
"I memorized the routing number of the offshore account Brandon used to hide my grandmother's money," I explained.
I dragged Chloe to a 24-hour public library a few blocks away.
I sat at a public computer terminal and pulled up the offshore banking portal.
My fingers flew across the keyboard as I entered the complex routing digits.
The screen loaded to reveal a balance of over three million dollars.
"I am transferring this money directly to an FBI escrow account," I declared.
I clicked the final submission button to initiate the massive wire transfer.
A bright red warning box popped up on the computer screen.
"Two-factor authentication required," the prompt read.
A six-digit security code had just been sent to the primary account holder's registered mobile device.

I stared at the masked phone number on the screen in absolute disbelief.
The security code had been sent directly to my mother's cell phone.
