Chapter 3 - The Ex-Girlfriend

My heart hammered violently against my ribs.
"How did you even get inside a police precinct?" I asked.
Chloe smiled and revealed a stolen detective's badge clipped to her belt.
"I paid someone a lot of money to look the other way," she explained.
She grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the back exit of the station.
"Brandon owes three million dollars to an illegal gambling ring," Chloe said as we hurried down the alley.
"He used your stolen identity to secure the initial credit line," she added.
We jumped into her battered sedan, and she sped away from the precinct.
"I have a flash drive with the real security footage proving Brandon hired your lookalike," Chloe promised.
"Why are you helping me instead of turning him in yourself?" I asked suspiciously.
Chloe gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white.
"Because Brandon offered me to the syndicate as collateral when he could not pay," she admitted tearfully.
We pulled into the parking lot of a deserted midnight diner to examine the flash drive.
I plugged the drive into her laptop and watched the glorious evidence load onto the screen.
Suddenly, the diner's front windows shattered into a million pieces.
Two massive men in dark suits stepped through the broken glass holding suppressed weapons.
"Hand over the girl," the taller man demanded in a gravelly voice.

I realized with absolute horror that they were not looking for Chloe.
Brandon had offered me as his ultimate collateral.
