Chapter 9 - The Father's Secret

I nearly crashed the van when I heard my father's voice through the encrypted federal channel.
I asked him how he had bypassed military-grade communication security from a hospital bed.
My father chuckled softly, a sound that brought tears of relief to my eyes.
He explained that he hadn't just been a regular forensic accountant for the city.
Before I was even born, he had served as a covert intelligence operative for the Department of Defense.
He had spent his entire retirement pretending to be a frail, ordinary man to protect our family.
When Vanessa started poisoning him and staging the abuse, he had played along to gather evidence on her network.
He knew everything about the corrupt police, the syndicate boss, and Director Vance.
He told me to drive the van to a secure military airfield on the outskirts of the county.
I pushed the heavy van to its absolute limit, weaving through the abandoned industrial roads.
Vanessa sat silently in the back, terrified by the realization that she had targeted a sleeping giant.
The syndicate boss looked completely defeated, knowing his entire empire was crumbling.
We arrived at the airfield just as the sun began to rise over the horizon.
A massive military transport plane was idling on the runway.
My father was standing near the boarding ramp, leaning lightly on a cane.
He looked battered and bruised, but his eyes were sharper and more dangerous than I had ever seen them.
Dozens of heavily armed federal marshals surrounded the perimeter.
They were loyal to my father's old military contacts, completely outside of Vance's corrupted jurisdiction.
I dragged Vanessa and the boss out of the van and handed them over to the marshals.
I ran to my father and hugged him tightly, careful not to aggravate his broken ribs.
He kissed my forehead and told me how incredibly proud he was of my bravery.
He handed me a thick folder containing the original, unredacted evidence from his safety deposit box.
It was enough proof to send hundreds of corrupt officials and cartel members to prison for life.
A black government SUV pulled up to the runway, and Director Vance was dragged out in handcuffs.
He glared at me with pure hatred as the marshals escorted him onto the prisoner transport plane.
The nightmare was finally unraveling, and justice was swiftly taking control of the city.
I breathed a sigh of immense relief, feeling the crushing weight of the last twenty-four hours lift from my shoulders.

I walked with my father toward a waiting medical helicopter that would take him to a safe location.
But as he stepped into the cabin, a bright red laser sight flickered across his chest.
