Chapter 1 - The Federal Intervention

I stared at the dark purple bruises wrapped like vines around my father's fragile forearm.
The trembling in his hands was not from mental decline, but from sheer terror.
I turned my gaze away from him and locked eyes with my sister-in-law across the room.
Vanessa was suddenly very quiet.
The fake tears had completely vanished from her heavily made-up face.
My brother Mark refused to make eye contact with me.
He simply stared at the scuffed linoleum floor of the police station.
Officer Davis stood frozen behind the main desk.
My gold federal credential wallet was still resting on the scratched wooden counter.
I gently rolled down my father's wool sleeve to protect his dignity.
I told Officer Davis that I wanted a forensics team down here immediately.
I demanded that my father's injuries be photographed and documented for a federal assault case.
Vanessa scoffed loudly and crossed her arms over her expensive designer coat.
She told the officer that my father was crazy and had inflicted those wounds on himself.
She claimed he had fallen down the stairs during one of his paranoid episodes.
I walked slowly across the room until I was standing merely inches from her face.
I lowered my voice so only she and my cowardly brother could hear me.
I promised her that I was going to tear her entire life apart.
Mark finally looked up and stepped between us.
He told me to back off because they had video proof of the attack.
He pulled his smartphone from his pocket and opened the security footage from their living room.
He shoved the glowing screen into my face with a triumphant smirk.
I watched the grainy night-vision footage play out on the small screen.
It showed my father swinging his arms wildly while Vanessa backed away in apparent fear.
It looked exactly like the mental breakdown they were trying to sell to the local police.
Officer Davis walked over and nodded confidently.
He claimed the video clearly justified putting my father in an involuntary psychiatric hold.
But twelve years in federal law enforcement trains your eyes to see what others blindly miss.
I grabbed my brother's wrist and paused the video exactly at the two-minute mark.
I zoomed in on the dark reflection cast against the living room window in the background.
I asked my brother who the third person standing in the shadows of their house was.
Mark looked at the screen and instantly turned as pale as a ghost.
The reflection clearly showed a tall man holding a baseball bat just out of the camera's frame.

I looked closely at the uniform worn by the man in the reflection.
It was the exact same uniform worn by Officer Davis.
