Chapter 3 - The Secret Lockbox

Panic instantly flooded the small living room as the reality of the deadly threat set in.

Chloe quickly shoved her terrified son behind the sturdy wooden sofa to shield him from the windows.

Thomas jumped up from his recliner with a sudden surge of protective, fatherly adrenaline.

He grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker and stood firmly between his family and the locked front door.

The aggressive pounding on the wooden door echoed through the house like thunder.

A deep, menacing voice from the porch demanded that they hand over the flash drive immediately.

Beatrice frantically pulled Chloe toward the narrow hallway leading to the back of the house.

We have to escape through the basement door before they break the hinges off the front entrance.

Chloe grabbed her backpack and held Leo's hand tightly as they sprinted down the dark, creaking stairs.

The basement smelled of damp earth and old memories, but it was their only viable exit strategy.

Before they reached the heavy cellar doors, Beatrice suddenly stopped and dropped to her knees.

She frantically clawed at a loose wooden floorboard hidden beneath an old, dusty rug.

Chloe stared in utter confusion as her mother pulled out a rusted metal lockbox from the dark cavity.

I knew David was a good man, and I secretly kept the physical ledger he mailed to us the day he died.

Thomas had been too scared to look at it, so I hid it down here hoping the truth would survive.

The sound of shattering glass upstairs signaled that Vance's violent men had successfully breached the living room.

Thomas yelled from the top of the basement stairs, urging them to run while he held the intruders off.

Chloe unlocked the cellar doors and pushed her mother and son out into the cold, rainy backyard.

She turned back to help her father, but a loud gunshot suddenly rang out from the floor above.

Thomas tumbled down the wooden stairs and landed heavily on the concrete floor with a pained groan.

Chloe screamed his name and rushed to his side, noticing a dark patch of blood blossoming on his shoulder.

Thomas weakly pushed her away and ordered her to get the evidence as far away from Albany as possible.

Beatrice helped haul her bleeding husband out into the muddy yard as the men's heavy footsteps pounded down the stairs.

They desperately scrambled over the chain-link fence and tumbled into the narrow alleyway behind the house.

Thomas's old, beat-up pickup truck was parked just down the street, offering a slim chance of escape.

Chloe fumbled with the keys her father handed her and managed to unlock the rusty doors.

They all piled into the cramped cabin just as the armed men burst out of the backyard gate.

Chloe slammed her foot onto the gas pedal, spinning the tires wildly on the wet asphalt.

The truck roared to life and sped down the suburban street, leaving the dangerous men momentarily behind.

Beatrice quickly opened the rusted lockbox to retrieve the physical ledger that could corroborate the digital files.

The color completely drained from her face as she stared into the empty metal container.

A chilling, handwritten note sat at the bottom of the box, mocking them with a single terrifying revelation.

The note simply read that Arthur Vance had always known about the hiding spot, and he had taken the ledger years ago.
