Chapter 6 - The Broken Badge

The revelation hit me like a freight train, completely shattering my understanding of everyone I loved.
My older brother, David, was the decorated police detective I had trusted to protect my children from the cartel.
Now, this bleeding mercenary was claiming David was entirely corrupt and heavily involved in this nightmare.
I refused to believe it, screaming that it was a desperate lie to break my spirit and force my surrender.
Silas chuckled darkly, finishing the bank transfer on his phone before slipping it back into his tailored pocket.
He proudly admitted that David had been on his payroll for five years, covering up cartel murders to pay off massive gambling debts.
"David sold your sons to me the moment you called him for help," Silas taunted, his eyes filled with malicious glee.
The betrayal was so profound it physically sickened me, making the room spin wildly out of control.
James saw my hesitation and lunged forward, driving his shoulder squarely into the wounded enforcer's chest.
The man stumbled backward, dropping his weapon as James unleashed a flurry of brutal, unforgiving punches.
I used the distraction to swing the heavy wooden stock of the rifle directly into Silas's knees, dropping the crime boss to the floor.
Eleanor shrieked in panic, turning on her expensive heels and sprinting out the shattered front door toward the street.
"Get the baby from her car!" James yelled over his shoulder, still grappling violently with the enforcer on the carpet.
I didn't hesitate for a single second, dropping the empty rifle and chasing my mother-in-law into the smoky neighborhood.
The burning wreckage of our SUV provided a horrific backdrop as I sprinted down the sidewalk.
Eleanor was surprisingly fast, desperately fumbling for her car keys as she reached a sleek black sedan parked near the corner.
I tackled her from behind, driving her face-first onto the meticulously manicured lawn of our neighbor's yard.
She clawed at my face, screaming profanities and demanding I let her go, but adrenaline fueled my desperate strength.
I pinned her arms to the grass, ripping the car keys from her manicured fingers with brutal efficiency.
I ran to the black sedan, clicking the unlock button and throwing open the rear passenger door.
The little girl was sleeping soundly in a temporary bassinet on the leather seat, completely unharmed by the madness outside.
I scooped her up gently, wrapping her securely in her pink blanket and holding her tightly against my racing heart.
I turned back toward my house, intending to help James finish off Silas and force him to reveal the location of my boys.
But as I looked down the street, my blood ran absolutely cold.
Four heavily armored police tactical vehicles were violently swarming my front yard, their sirens blaring loudly.
Dozens of SWAT officers poured out of the trucks, aiming their assault rifles directly at the front door of my home.
And leading the charge, wearing a tactical vest and shouting orders into a megaphone, was my corrupt brother, David.

He pointed directly at me, his voice booming over the megaphone with chilling authority.
"Arrest that woman immediately, she just murdered her family and set her own house on fire!" David shouted to the officers.
