Chapter 3 - The Hostage Trade

The phone slipped from my trembling fingers, bouncing onto the floorboard of the moving SUV.

James slammed on the brakes, swerving into an empty commercial parking lot as I desperately tried to retrieve the device.

I put the call on speakerphone, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I stared at the dashboard.

"Who is this?" James demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, threatening register.

The man on the other end laughed softly, a sound that made my blood run completely cold.

"You know exactly who I am, James, because you signed a contract with my name on it ten years ago," Silas Vance replied.

Silas explained that his men had bypassed our home security system while we were distracted at the hospital.

He described the exact clothes my three sons were wearing, proving beyond a doubt that he was standing inside my living room.

My nine-year-old was wearing his favorite baseball jersey, and my youngest was holding his stuffed dinosaur.

Tears streamed down my face as I begged him not to hurt them, promising him anything he wanted.

"I only want what is legally mine, Sarah," Silas stated with terrifying calmness.

He gave us exactly thirty minutes to return to the house and hand over the baby girl, or he would begin executing my children.

The line went dead, leaving us in a suffocating silence broken only by the quiet hum of the car engine.

James pounded his fists against the steering wheel, screaming in absolute agony and frustration.

I looked at the beautiful baby sleeping peacefully in the back seat, completely unaware of the deadly storm surrounding her.

She was innocent, but my three boys were my entire world, and I would burn the earth to save them.

We devised a desperate, reckless plan as James sped aggressively toward our suburban neighborhood.

I wrapped a large, heavy sack of flour from my recent grocery trip into the spare pink blanket, shaping it to look like an infant.

We knew the disguise would only fool Silas for a few seconds, but that was all the time James needed to strike.

I hid the real baby on the floorboard beneath my seat, praying she would remain silent during the confrontation.

We pulled into our driveway, seeing three unfamiliar black vehicles parked aggressively on our front lawn.

James grabbed his hunting rifle from the lockbox in the trunk, chambering a round with a terrifyingly smooth motion.

I carried the bundled decoy tightly against my chest, walking up to the front door of my own home like a prisoner marching to the gallows.

The front door swung open before I could even turn the knob, revealing an armed guard holding an assault rifle.

He grabbed my arm and dragged me into the hallway, forcing me into the center of our living room.

I looked around frantically, expecting to see my three boys tied up on the couch, but the room was completely empty.

Silas Vance stood by the fireplace, swirling a glass of our expensive whiskey with a disappointed sigh.

"Did you really think I would keep your children here, Sarah?" he asked with a cruel smile.

"Your boys are already halfway across the state in the trunk of my car, and they are never coming back."
