Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Alliance

The temperature in the locked pathology lab was dropping rapidly.
Caleb banged his fists against the reinforced glass window of the heavy metal door.
Through the glass, he could see Julian standing in the corridor, holding a large heavy wrench.
"Vanessa figured you would go looking for proof," Julian said through the intercom.
"She sent me down here to clean up the last loose end."
Caleb held the vial of poisoned blood up to the window.
"If I die in here, this blood gets tested during my autopsy, and you both go down for murder!" Caleb shouted.
Julian stared at the vial for a long moment, his confident expression slowly fading.
"Vanessa told me she already paid off the coroner," Julian muttered, sounding unsure.
Caleb seized the moment of doubt and pressed his face against the cold glass.
"She played you, Julian," Caleb pleaded.
"She froze the eighty-two million by claiming she's pregnant, but Arthur was totally sterile from a childhood illness!"
Julian stepped closer to the glass, his eyes widening in complete shock.
"That's impossible," Julian whispered to himself.
"She's three months pregnant, which means that baby isn't Arthur's," Caleb continued rapidly.
"She's planning to claim the entire estate for herself and the baby, leaving you with absolutely nothing."
Julian gripped the wrench so tightly his knuckles cracked.
He realized Vanessa had been using him to do her dirty work while securing her own future.
With an angry shout, Julian swung the wrench and smashed the electronic locking mechanism next to the door.
The heavy door clicked and swung open, letting a rush of warm air into the freezing lab.
Julian grabbed Caleb by the collar of his scrubs and pulled him into the hallway.
"I want forty million dollars transferred to an offshore account the moment you get access to the estate," Julian demanded.
Caleb nodded without hesitation.
"You get half, and I get my sister back," Caleb agreed.
Julian let go of Caleb's collar and pointed toward the service elevator.
"Take the blood to Marcus and get the police involved immediately," Julian ordered.
"I'm going to pay Vanessa a visit at the mansion and make sure she doesn't leave town."
Caleb sprinted toward the elevator, clutching the vial of evidence that would save everything.
He burst into the hospital lobby, only to find three police cruisers parked directly outside the main entrance.
A pair of uniformed officers walked through the sliding glass doors, scanning the crowd.
One of the officers pointed directly at Caleb.

"That's him," the officer said, unsnapping the holster of his service weapon.
"Caleb Miller, you're under arrest for the grand theft of controlled medical property and the suspected murder of Arthur Vance."
