Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The powerful magnetic field roared to life with a deafening, rhythmic thumping noise.

Evelyn intentionally let go of the metal scalpel in her hand.

The incredible magnetic force instantly ripped the blade through the air.

It slammed violently against the white plastic casing of the MRI machine, pinning itself there by the invisible field.

Evelyn laughed, reaching into the deep pocket of her pristine white lab coat.

Since metal weapons were useless in this room, she pulled out a long, heavy plastic syringe.

The syringe was filled with a clear, deadly liquid.

She stepped cautiously around the console, her eyes wide with unhinged excitement.

She taunted Cole, telling him that potassium chloride would stop his heart instantly and leave virtually no trace.

Cole stood up from our hiding spot, placing his body completely between Evelyn and me.

He tried to reason with her, begging her to tell him where she had hidden my mother.

Evelyn scoffed and admitted that my mother was perfectly safe for now.

She casually mentioned that the basement morgue freezer was quite chilly, but my mother would survive if we surrendered.

The realization that my mother was locked in a freezing vault sent a rush of pure adrenaline through my veins.

Evelyn lunged forward, thrusting the deadly plastic needle directly at Cole’s neck.

I did not think, I simply reacted.

I grabbed a heavy plastic medical tray from a nearby cart and swung it with all my might.

The tray struck Evelyn hard across the jaw, knocking her violently to the side.

She stumbled, but her momentum carried her forward into Cole.

The needle plunged deep into Cole’s shoulder, and Evelyn slammed the plunger down.

Cole gasped in pain, staggering backward as the lethal chemical flooded his bloodstream.

He collapsed onto the cold linoleum floor, clutching his chest as his heart began to flutter erratically.

Evelyn wiped a drop of blood from her lip and smiled triumphantly down at the dying man she once claimed to love.
