Chapter 7 - The Frame Job

Evelyn pointed a perfectly manicured finger up the dark stairwell.

She sobbed loudly, telling the SWAT commander that Cole had gone completely insane.

She claimed she had personally witnessed Cole stab Dr. Harrison in a jealous rage.

I grabbed Cole’s arm and pulled him back from the railing before the police could spot us.

We silently sprinted down a narrow maintenance corridor connecting the east and west wings.

My mind raced as the puzzle pieces finally snapped together with sickening clarity.

Evelyn was the one who had always coveted Cole’s position as deputy chief.

She was the one who wore that distinct, heavy jasmine perfume that always lingered in Cole’s office.

I suddenly remembered smelling that exact same jasmine perfume on the red trench coat in the lobby.

Evelyn had hired the actor, staged the kiss, sent the photos, and engineered this entire nightmare.

She wanted me gone, and she wanted Cole destroyed so she could take everything he had built.

Cole guided us through a pair of swinging doors into the deserted radiology department.

The lights were completely shut off due to the active shooter lockdown.

We ducked into the main MRI suite, closing the heavy, lead-lined door behind us.

The massive white MRI machine sat in the center of the dark room like a sleeping giant.

We crouched behind the control console, trying to quiet our ragged breathing.

The heavy door to the suite slowly creaked open, letting a sliver of hallway light slice through the darkness.

A silhouette stepped into the room, silhouetted by the flashing red emergency lights outside.

I smelled the overpowering scent of heavy jasmine perfume fill the sterile air.

Evelyn stepped fully into the room, holding a long, gleaming metal surgical scalpel.

She smiled sweetly into the darkness and casually reached for the main power switch on the wall.

With a loud, humming surge, she activated the massive magnetic field of the MRI machine.
