Chapter 10 - The Italian Sun

I walked to the front door and opened it, expecting a delivery driver with our new rugs.
Instead, the porch was completely empty.
I looked down and saw a plain brown envelope resting on the welcome mat.
There was no return address and no postage stamps.
I picked it up, a strange prickle of unease running down the back of my neck.
I brought it back into the kitchen and sat down next to Marcus.
"What is that?" he asked, wiping his hands on a towel.
"I don't know, someone just left it on the porch," I replied, tearing the seal open.
Inside, there was a single photograph.
It was a beautiful, high-resolution copy of our wedding picture from the Tuscan terrace.

My breath caught as I flipped the photograph over.
Written on the back in elegant, cursive ink was a single sentence: "He never filed the paperwork."
A second slip of paper fell out of the envelope and fluttered onto the kitchen table.

It was a flight itinerary from Rome to San Francisco, booked under the name Robert Vance.
He was landing tomorrow.
