Chapter 7 - CAUGHT IN THE ACT

At 9:00 PM, the back door creaked open.
Margaret stepped into the moonlit kitchen. She didn't have real estate paperwork in her hand. She had a crowbar and a heavy-duty trash bag. She thought I was gone, and she was here to clean out Thomas’s safe before the authorities started asking questions about the farm's assets.

Margaret recovered quickly, her eyes narrowing. "You little liar. Where are the squatter and the brat? Did they burn up in the fire? Because if they did, I have a great lawyer who can help you cover up your arson, Clara. For a price."
"They're fine, Margaret," a voice said.
Elise stepped out from the living room, holding my hunting rifle. She didn't have it raised, but she held it comfortably. "And we didn't burn up. Because Clara moved us out."

Margaret scoffed, trying to regain her dominant posture. "It doesn't matter. You have no proof of anything. I have the trust. I have the money. You two are just a bitter widow and a delusional tramp."
"Are you sure about that?" I asked, tapping the iPad sitting on the shelf. The red recording dot was blinking.
