Chapter 4 - The Digital Trail

A heavy, suffocating silence descended over the hospital room as Chloe's horrifying words echoed through the radio.

My own husband was threatening to murder our eight-year-old daughter just to get his hands on a settlement check.

"He's completely lost his mind," I whispered, staring blankly at the white ceiling tiles above me.

"This isn't just about the money anymore; Henry is running from someone much more dangerous than the police," Richard said grimly.

My parents, Kathleen and Eric, suddenly burst into the hospital room, their faces pale and streaked with terrified tears.

"We just saw the news about the school lockdown on television!" my mother cried, rushing to hug my neck.

I quickly explained the terrifying ransom demand, and my father's hands curled into tight, trembling fists.

"I'll kill him with my bare hands," my father vowed, pacing the floor like a caged animal.

Richard stood up, his towering presence immediately bringing a sense of order to the chaotic room.

"Violence won't save Emily, but intelligence will," Richard said, pulling out a sleek laptop from his leather briefcase.

"Henry is a mid-level manager with a gambling problem, meaning he relies on sloppy digital trails to move his stolen money," Richard deduced.

I looked at the laptop, and a sudden spark of memory ignited in the darkest corners of my exhausted mind.

"Before Henry forced me to quit my job, I was a senior forensic accountant," I said, my voice growing surprisingly steady.

I remembered Henry drunkenly forcing me to sign some complicated tax documents last Thanksgiving.

"He thought I was just blindly signing papers, but I memorized the routing numbers for the offshore shell companies," I revealed.

Richard's eyes widened in genuine surprise and immense respect as he quickly handed me the laptop.

Despite the agonizing pain in my ribs, I propped myself up on the pillows and let my fingers fly across the keyboard.

I bypassed the standard firewalls and dove deep into the hidden Cayman Islands banking registry.

"I'm in," I announced, pulling up a dizzying spreadsheet of Henry's secret financial transactions.

"He owes nearly seven million dollars to a shadow corporation called Obsidian Holdings," I read aloud.

Richard's face suddenly turned ashen, and he reached out to grip the edge of my hospital bed for support.

"My god, Amy," Richard breathed heavily.

"Obsidian Holdings isn't a loan shark; it's a black-ops corporate espionage firm run by my biggest, most ruthless rival."
