Chapter 1 - The CEO

All the color completely drained from the young nurse's cheeks as she took a slow, trembling step backward.

I turned my head, fighting the blinding pain in my fractured ribs, and gasped at the sight before me.

Standing in the hospital doorway was a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit that screamed effortless power.

His cold, piercing gray eyes locked onto Henry's hand, which was still hovering dangerously over my bruised arm.

I recognized him instantly from the news articles I used to read during my accounting days.

This was Richard Vance, the billionaire CEO of Vance Enterprises, which happened to be the very company where my husband worked as a mid-level manager.

Henry turned around, the angry red flush on his face draining into a sickly, terrified white.

"Mr. Vance," Henry stammered, his voice cracking like a frightened child.

"Get your hands off her," Richard commanded, his voice barely above a whisper but echoing with absolute authority.

Henry scrambled backward, knocking over the plastic water pitcher and sending it crashing to the linoleum floor.

"Sir, you don't understand, my wife is just having a dramatic episode and I was trying to calm her down," Henry lied, sweating profusely.

Richard stepped fully into the room, flanked by two massive men in dark suits who looked like private security.

He ignored Henry completely and walked straight to my bedside.

"Mrs. Carter, my name is Richard Vance, and my teenage daughter was the one driving the car that hit you," he said softly.

My breath caught in my throat as the pieces of the puzzle suddenly fell into place.

"I have been monitoring your recovery closely, ensuring my legal team covers every single medical bill," Richard explained.

Henry stepped forward nervously, rubbing his hands together with a greasy smile.

"Well, Mr. Vance, we are so grateful for your generosity, and we won't press charges if the settlement is right," Henry interrupted.

Richard slowly turned to face my husband, his expression turning into a mask of pure disgust.

"I am not here to negotiate a settlement with you, Henry," Richard said coldly.

"I am here because my forensic accountants just finished looking into the corporate funds you embezzled over the last two years," Richard continued.

Henry gasped, taking a step back until his shoulders hit the stark white hospital wall.

"But more importantly," Richard said, pulling a thick Manila folder from his briefcase, "I found out what you did three days before your wife's accident."

Richard tossed the folder onto my lap, the heavy paper landing squarely on my chest casts.

"Your husband didn't just drain your life savings, Amy," Richard said, looking me dead in the eye.

"He took out a five-million-dollar life insurance policy on you, and the police have reason to believe my daughter's brakes were deliberately cut."
