Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Revealed
The sterile smell of the hospital waiting room did nothing to calm Adrian’s racing heart as he paced the floor.
Hours had passed since Clara had been rushed into emergency surgery to remove the bullet.
Olivia was asleep on a set of plastic chairs, holding tightly to the baby carrier containing a peaceful Emma.
Adrian kept replaying the events of the night, furious that Vanessa had managed to slip away into the darkness.
The revelation that his fiancée was actually a wanted criminal explained her ruthless efficiency and her cold demeanor.
A tired-looking surgeon finally pushed through the double doors, pulling off his surgical mask.
He informed Adrian that Clara had survived the operation, but she was incredibly weak and needed time to recover.
Adrian rushed into the recovery room, finding Clara pale but awake, staring blankly at the ceiling.
He sat beside her, gently kissing her knuckles, overwhelmed with emotions he had been burying for months.
He confessed that he had been an absolute fool, blinded by grief and manipulation, and begged for her forgiveness.
Clara turned her head slowly, a single tear escaping her eye as she squeezed his hand in return.
She whispered that she didn't blame him, because she knew exactly how persuasive the mastermind could be.
Adrian frowned in confusion, asking her what she meant by a mastermind.
Clara took a shaky breath and revealed that Vanessa was not working alone, nor was she the true orchestrator.
She confessed that she had recognized the distorted voice on the phone earlier that night.
It belonged to Julian, Adrian’s former business partner who had supposedly died in a plane crash five years ago.
Adrian felt the blood drain from his face as the impossible reality crashed down upon him.

Before he could process the information, the hospital room’s television suddenly flickered to life on its own.
A live broadcast appeared, showing Julian standing in front of Adrian’s corporate headquarters, smiling directly into the camera.
