Chapter 2 - The Hostage Situation
The sound of the gun being cocked echoed like a cannon in the tense living room.
Adrian instinctively stepped in front of his teenage daughter to shield her from the madwoman.
Clara slowly pushed herself off the floor and positioned her body over the crying baby.
Vanessa paced back and forth, waving the weapon erratically at the terrified family.
She confessed that she had never loved Adrian and was only after his immense corporate wealth.
The plan had been simple: get rid of the baby, frame the innocent nanny, and comfort the grieving billionaire into marriage.
Adrian gritted his teeth, promising Vanessa that she would never get away with this insane scheme.
Vanessa merely chuckled and glanced at the grandfather clock ticking away in the corner of the room.
She explained that she didn’t need to get away with it, because her backup plan was already in motion.
Sweat beaded on Adrian’s forehead as he tried to calculate the distance between himself and the fireplace poker.
Clara caught his eye and gave a subtle, almost imperceptible shake of her head to warn him against it.
She spoke up softly, trying to appeal to whatever shred of humanity Vanessa had left.
Vanessa ignored the plea and pulled out a burner phone from her pocket, dialing a number.
She put the phone on speaker, and a deep, heavily distorted voice filled the room.
The voice announced that the transfer of Adrian’s entire company portfolio was nearly complete.
Adrian realized with mounting horror that this was a highly coordinated corporate takeover, not just a jealous lover’s plot.

Vanessa smiled, aimed the gun directly at Clara’s head, and slowly began to squeeze the trigger.
