Chapter 1 - The Faded Ink

Ethan stared at the frantic handwriting on the back of his late wife's photograph.

His hands trembled as he recognized Clara's delicate and unmistakable signature.

The faded ink carried a warning that completely shattered his entire reality.

Clara had written that Celeste was an imposter hiding a very violent past.

The message explicitly warned Ethan that Richard was not just a friendly neighbor.

Clara believed the two of them were plotting to steal the entire family fortune.

She stated that her own life was in danger because she had discovered their secret.

Ethan felt his blood turn to ice as he processed the horrifying truth.

He slowly looked up from the photograph and stared at the grand staircase.

Celeste was completely frozen with a look of pure panic on her beautiful face.

The airline tickets had slipped from her hands and fluttered down to the marble floor.

Richard was standing right behind her with his shirt casually unbuttoned.

Ethan pulled his terrified daughter securely behind his own body.

He gripped Sophie's small hand and promised her that everything would be okay.

He demanded to know exactly where they were planning to take his child.

Celeste recovered her composure and offered a sickeningly sweet smile.

She casually walked down the stairs and told Ethan he was making a huge mistake.

Richard followed closely behind her with a cold and calculating glare.

Ethan noticed Richard slowly reaching his hand inside his tailored suit jacket.

He knew instantly that the man was reaching for a concealed weapon.

Ethan tightened his grip on the heavy iron fireplace tool he used to break the suitcase lock.

He yelled at Sophie to close her eyes and cover her ears.

Richard pulled out a silver pistol and aimed it directly at Ethan's chest.

Celeste laughed softly and told Richard to make sure it looked like a home invasion.

Ethan braced his legs and prepared to throw the heavy iron tool.

He knew he had to kill Richard before the man could pull the trigger.

A sudden metallic click echoed loudly through the massive living room.

Before any weapon could be fired, the entire mansion plunged into absolute darkness.

The sudden blackout was accompanied by the sound of shattering glass from the kitchen.

Someone else had just breached the perimeter of the locked estate.

Ethan grabbed Sophie by the arm and pulled her silently behind the heavy leather sofa.

He heard Richard cursing loudly as he stumbled blindly in the pitch-black room.

Celeste yelled for Richard to turn on his phone flashlight.

A bright beam of light suddenly cut through the darkness and swept across the floor.

The beam illuminated the bloody footprints of a stranger walking toward the living room.
