Chapter 8 - The Crossfire

Damian stood perfectly still, his eyes locked on his brother.
"Julian," Damian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
"You sold out your own blood to a dead man."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"You made us weak, Damian."
"You stopped the drug trade, you tried to make the syndicate legitimate."
"I am just taking back what belongs to our family."
David racked his shotgun with a loud, metallic clack.
"Enough family drama," David sneered.
"I want the deed to the downtown casinos, Damian, and then you die."
I stared at David, feeling a surge of absolute hatred.
"You are a monster," I screamed at him.
David smirked at me.
"You always were too emotional, Chloe."
Suddenly, David pressed a button on a remote control in his hand.
A loud mechanical grinding sound echoed through the warehouse.
Thick pipes above the glass enclosure suddenly burst open.
Water began pouring into the locked room where Mia was trapped.
Mia screamed as the freezing water instantly rose to her ankles.
"No!" I shrieked, aiming the small pistol at David.
Before I could pull the trigger, chaos erupted.
Damian drew his weapon with blinding speed and shot the remote out of David's hand.
Julian opened fire, the bullets tearing into the concrete pillars around us.
Damian tackled me to the ground behind a stack of wooden crates.
The deafening roar of gunfire filled the warehouse.
Wood splinters rained down on my head.
I looked desperately toward the glass room.
The water was already up to Mia's waist.
She was pounding on the glass, her mouth open in a silent scream.
"I have to get her!" I cried, trying to crawl out from cover.
Damian pinned me down.
"You will die if you step out there," he shouted over the gunfire.
"I'll cover you."
"When I move, you run for the electronic control panel on the wall."
Damian reloaded his gun and gave me a fierce, determined look.
"Now!" Damian roared.
He stepped out of cover, firing rapidly at Julian.
I sprinted across the open floor, praying I wouldn't feel a bullet pierce my back.
I reached the control panel, but my heart stopped completely.
May you like
Julian had shot the control box to pieces.
The wiring was completely destroyed, and the water was still rising.
