Chapter 5 - The Ghost

I froze, my mind racing in a hundred different directions.
"I don't know what you are talking about," I stammered.
The stranger took a step forward, completely ignoring Damian's aimed weapon.
"You really don't know, do you?" the stranger laughed.
"The Falcones hired me to watch you, but someone else paid me double to snatch the kid."
He pointed a gloved finger directly at Mia, who was still hiding behind the counter.
"Your ex-husband has very deep pockets, Chloe."
The room spun around me.
I gripped the edge of the marble counter to keep from collapsing.
"That's impossible," I gasped.
"David died in a car crash three years ago."
I had identified his body.
I had buried him.
"David is very much alive," the stranger smirked.
"And he wants his daughter back."
Damian's expression darkened into something truly terrifying.
"You talk too much," Damian growled.
Damian fired his weapon.
He didn't aim for the stranger's chest.
He shot the glass chandelier hanging directly above the intruder.
A massive shower of crystal and metal crashed down onto the floor.
The stranger dove to the side, firing wildly into the room.
Smoke and dust filled the air instantly.
"Chloe, get down!" Damian roared, lunging toward me.
I dropped to the floor, reaching desperately for Mia's hand.
I felt small fingers brush against mine, but they were ripped away.
Mia screamed my name.
I scrambled through the blinding dust, choking on the debris.
When the smoke finally began to clear, the penthouse was dead silent.
The stranger was gone.

Damian's security guard was bleeding on the floor.
And Mia was missing.
