Chapter 9 - The Water's Edge

The freezing ocean water began pouring over the railing of the sinking yacht.

Julian’s grip on Claire’s ankle was like a steel trap dragging her downward.

"Let her go!" Maya screamed from the dock, desperately searching for a weapon.

Claire kicked furiously with her free leg, aiming directly for Julian’s face.

Her heel connected with his nose, sending a spray of blood across the white deck.

Julian groaned in agony but refused to let go of his hostage.

The yacht groaned loudly as the heavy rear engines pulled the boat completely under the surface.

The freezing dark water rushed over Claire’s head, stealing the breath from her lungs.

She was violently pulled underwater into the terrifying darkness of the harbor.

Julian was still clinging to her, using her body weight to keep himself from sinking deeper.

Claire opened her eyes, ignoring the burning salt, and grabbed the heavy silver belt buckle around Julian’s waist.

With her last ounce of oxygen, she unlatched the heavy belt and slipped her foot completely out of her shoe.

Julian lost his grip and tumbled backward into the dark abyss of the sinking ship.

Claire kicked hard toward the faint, glowing light of the surface above.

She broke the surface of the water, gasping violently for precious air.

Strong hands immediately grabbed her by the shoulders and hauled her onto the wooden dock.

Maya collapsed beside her, sobbing uncontrollably as she held her twin sister tightly.

Leo wrapped his small arms around both of them, completing the circle.

They sat on the wet pier, watching the final tip of Julian's yacht disappear beneath the black water.

Suddenly, a massive fleet of police cars and federal tactical vans swarmed the harbor.

Dozens of heavily armed officers rushed the docks with their weapons drawn.

"Put your hands in the air!" an officer shouted through a megaphone.

Maya did not run, and she did not fight back this time.

She stood up calmly and raised her hands, knowing the truth was finally out.

An FBI agent walked forward, lowering his weapon as he recognized her face from the viral news broadcast.

"Are you Maya Sterling?" the federal agent asked respectfully.

Maya nodded slowly, holding her son's hand tightly.

"Julian Sterling is gone, and you have the evidence of what he did to me," Maya said.

The agent nodded and motioned for the paramedics to bring warm blankets.

"You are safe now, ma'am, the nightmare is officially over," the agent promised.

They wrapped the three survivors in thick blankets and led them toward the ambulances.

Claire looked back at the dark, bubbling water where the monster had finally met his end.

May you like

She squeezed her sister's hand, knowing they had won the impossible war.

But as the ambulance doors closed, a single, wet hand reached up from the water and gripped the edge of the wooden pier.
