Chapter 6 - Cut Off

Adrian felt the weight of Marcus's words crushing the air out of his lungs.
Thousands of innocent lives were going to be at risk because Arthur wanted to protect his profit margins.
Adrian thanked Marcus, memorized a safe location to meet later, and destroyed the burner phone.
He looked at Marissa, who was currently trying to warm up a bottle of formula in the sink under hot running water.
She looked exhausted, completely soaked in rainwater, but her eyes remained fiercely determined.
Adrian felt a profound sense of respect and admiration for this woman he had barely noticed for seven months.
He promised her that he was not going to let Arthur win.
Marissa finished feeding Owen and looked up at Adrian with a glimmer of hope.
She revealed that the blue envelope she had given Arthur tonight was completely fake.
She had filled it with useless, printed spreadsheets to fool the attorney for one more month.
The actual evidence Julian had gathered was hidden in a secure, private safety deposit box across town.
Adrian smiled for the first time all night, realizing they still had the upper hand.
With the real documents, they could stop the building's grand opening and send Arthur to federal prison.
He asked Marissa if she still had the physical key to access the bank vault.
Marissa nodded confidently and reached into the deep inner pocket of her gray coat.
Her confident expression suddenly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, absolute terror.
She frantically patted her pockets, turning the lining of the coat completely inside out.
Adrian watched as her face grew pale under the flickering fluorescent lights of the subway bathroom.
She held up the corner of her coat to show him a jagged, torn hole in the fabric.
The key must have fallen out when Adrian had violently tackled her away from the speeding SUV.
Without that key, the bank would never let them access the vault.
And the key was currently lying in the mud, right next to where Arthur's hitmen had crashed.
Adrian realized they had to go back to the scene of the attack before the sun came up.
Just as they opened the bathroom door to leave, the subway station's public television screens switched on.
May you like
Adrian's face was plastered across every single screen in bright red breaking news graphics.
The headline read that Adrian Whitmore was wanted for the brutal murder of his housekeeper, Marissa Keane.
