Chapter 20 - Beyond the Shadows

Three months later, the rugged peaks of the Montana mountains were blanketed not in freezing snow, but in a vibrant, sprawling carpet of emerald grass and golden alpine wildflowers.
The federal task force, working off the massive digital ledger we had leaked, completely dismantled every remnant of the High Commission. Over four hundred indictments were handed down across the nation, ensuring that the shadowy syndicate would never rise again. Because Matteo and I had provided the undeniable evidence that brought down the entire network, our records were permanently sealed under deep witness protection agreements, erasing the names Dante and Matteo Moretti from every active database on earth.
Our rebuilt ranch house stood proudly against the backdrop of the towering pines, smelling of fresh cedar, sweet mountain air, and wild lavender.
Matteo sat out on the wide wooden porch, patiently carving a wooden toy horse for Lily, his scarred hands now gentle and steady. Lily's joyful, unrestrained laughter echoed across the open pasture as she chased our two golden retrievers through the blooming clover, completely unburdened by the terrifying shadows that had once haunted her childhood.
Beatrice stepped out through the screen door, carrying two glasses of iced lemonade, her eyes warm and completely free of the desperate fear that had once defined her life in Chicago. She walked over to me, leaning her head softly against my chest as I wrapped my arm securely around her waist.
For the first time in my thirty-six years of existence, I did not carry a concealed weapon beneath my jacket. I did not constantly scan the treeline for snipers, nor did I listen for the clicking of electronic detonators in the dark.

I looked down at the woman who had risked everything to save her child, and at the brother who had walked through hell to stand beside me in the light. We had burned down an entire empire of blood, deception, and greed, not to conquer the world, but simply to earn the right to live peacefully within it.
As the evening sun dipped below the jagged mountain horizon, bathing our valley in warm, amber light, I knew our past was finally buried six feet deep. A new dawn had broken, and we were finally home.
